How to use ChatGPT to learn a language
Welcome to this week’s post. Today we’re going to explore ChatGPT as a study tool for learning a language. We’re going to go over some basics, and different strategies on how to incorporate ChatGPT as a learning tool.
I write articles like this in my newsletter at the https://www.polyglotpostman.com/ and if you find value in this come subscribe. Don’t forget to follow me here on Medium as well!
What is ChatGPT
ChatGPT is a artificial intelligence chat bot, that answers questions, writes things, and pulls information. It’s been very popular in the tech world as of late, for its ability to write essays and perform better functions than Google. I saw Steve Kaufmann on Twitter interacting with it, and others, and it motivated me to try it out and see what we can do.
So what can ChatGPT do?
Well if you ask ChatGPT how it can help you learn a language this is its response:

So you can use this as a reference tool, or a digital conversation partner, but let’s dig in to some more things that we can use ChatGPT for. As far as the extent of the languages that it operates in, this is the reponse:

If your language isn’t listed you may want to ask ChatGPT if it operates in your target language.
Basic Conversation with ChatGPT

As you can see, we have a basic conversation in German. Most native speakers of other languages have notified me that these dialogues are accurate and grammatically correct. Now what about feedback? Does ChatGPT give feedback like a traditional language partner?

As you can see, it not only looks for mistakes, but it also provides feedback on how other details, such as formal vs. informal, or more organic ways of speaking. When you have a language partner (which read last week’s post about that) you often have these hard balances to strike with when to correct, when to give feedback, etc. ChatGPT isn’t an awkward human. Also if you’re learning a language, and you’re experiencing constant harassment (which I also discussed in last week’s post) you can avoid all these issues. Some people may like that human connection and ChatGPT will probably not be your friend, or hang out with you.
How does ChatGPT teach grammar?

Here you can see that I asked ChatGPT to help me with relative clauses in German. This can be a great study aid, when you don’t have the money to pay for a teacher, or may have trouble understanding written explanations of grammar. ChatGPT not only can explain grammatical concepts, but can produce exercises that you can ask questions on.

What about reading, can ChatGPT do that too?
I explored this option in ChatGPT as well.

As you can see ChatGPT is very flexible. Here’s a basic text about the weather in German with a translation. One thing I encourage with input, and especially reading is to read things that you are interested in. I’m interested in Politics, so let’s see if I can have a theme with my text.

Now you can read this article, and maybe create flashcards for the words you don’t know. Now if I want to talk Politics with a German speaker, I will have a solid amount of knowledge and vocabulary to go along with it.
How ChatGPT can help you build an Anki Deck
If you’ve ever made flashcards as a language learner it’s often hard to figure out what types of words you want, ChatGPT can do that too!

You could use ChatGPT as a building tool, to create Anki decks, or whatever flashcard application you use. You can narrow this down to specifications that you have, or general topics. You don’t have to search anymore for that perfect Anki deck. You can customize it to your preferences by feeding words from ChatGPT in to your deck.
Create a Study Plan with ChatGPT
I saw a user on Twitter do this, and I thought it was brilliant. What if you’re not sure on how to approach multiple languages, or how much time to put in to each language.

Now this is a sample, and you can change it to fit your life, but it’s very helpful having a study plan, if you’re committed to learning languages, and you’re juggling many at once, sometimes it can be hard. I like this feature from ChatGPT, and think the possibilities are endless.
There are many more possibilities with using ChatGPT, and we could spend days writing different strategies, but I hope that these particular ones inspire you to create an account and start experimenting and maybe using it to fill in gaps with your learning.
