How to Trick Out Your Medium Profile to Get More Reads
There’s more to adding an index than people think

The popular thing to do these days is to create an index for your Medium articles to facilitate easier reader navigation. I have a secret to tell you. Your index could offer even more value than you think.
Yes, organizing and linking your articles so readers can find your stories is very helpful. Since I added my index a few days ago, I have seen a small uptick in views of some of my older (but just-as-fantastic) stories.
Taking the four hours to link to my 200+ stories also helped me be able to review what I have written over the past few months, get new inspiration from old stories, and take a trip down oh-my-gosh-I-can-’t-believe-I-made-that-rookie-writing-mistake-lane.
Here’s is what I believe to be the most important benefit of an index:
You create an automatic poll of topics people want to read.
If you look at the screenshot above, I have divided my stories into five categories — personal stuff, business, productivity, self-improvement, and writing. When readers visit my profile, my index is the first thing they see. If they want to read more, they click on the topic they want to explore.
Guess what mine was? WRITING.
Overwhelmingly, people who go to my page want to read about writing. This is VERY helpful to me. Why? I thought that most of the folks reading my stories were interested in productivity. According to these numbers, nobody gives any craps about productivity. But, they do care about writing, writing for Medium (thus, this article), and creativity.
Why can this information get you more reads? Because you can tailor your writing to what your readers want. Now, I won’t always write about writing, but now I know that if I’m going to write about anything else, I’m more likely to get engagement if I write about business and entrepreneurship than if I write about productivity. Twice as likely, to be exact.
In conclusion, creating an index for your Medium page, in my opinion, is well worth the few hours it takes to do the busywork. Not only can it provide more value for your readers, but it can also automatically collect data for you.
