The article suggests that adopting positive habits, practicing gratitude, and focusing on what you can control are key to improving your life and increasing happiness.

Abstract

The article "The 4 Minutes It Takes To Read This Article Will Improve Your Life Forever" emphasizes the importance of internal mindset shifts for achieving happiness. It argues that external factors like vacations or new possessions are not the source of lasting happiness. Instead, the author advocates for looking within oneself and developing a positive mindset, drawing on wisdom from ancient Roman philosophers like Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus. The article outlines a three-step approach to happiness: adopting the habits of the person you aspire to be, practicing daily gratitude, and letting go of things beyond your control. By following these steps, the author suggests that individuals can overcome negative thoughts, improve self-esteem, and live a more optimistic life.

Why do you spend so much time trying to be happy?

Without even knowing you, I can tell that you want to live a good life. You want to wake up each morning with a smile on your face and feel extremely grateful for every opportunity you receive. But no matter how hard you try to increase your level of happiness, nothing seems to work.

Right? We think, “if I can go on vacation, buy a new phone, or find someone to love, then I’ll finally be happy.” But sooner or later, you realize that it’s impossible to find happiness from anything external.

Instead, you need to look within yourself and begin improving your mindset for the better. Like the Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius once said:

“Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.”

I understand how you feel as I’ve found myself in the same position as you many times. You want to fulfill your potential, improve your life, and live each day with a renewed sense of optimism.

Fortunately, there’s a solution to your current state of unhappiness. Because if negative thoughts prevent you from living the life you deserve, eliminating them will enable every aspect of your life to change for the better.

Here’s how.

Adopt The Habits Of The Person You Want To Be

“First say to yourself what you would be, and then do what you have to do.” — Epictetus

If you want to change your life for the better, you first need to identify what you want your future to look like. Put simply, you need to identify the type of person you want to be, and then implement the necessary actions to make your dream a reality.

My anxiety used to prevent me from living a happy life. So naturally, I wanted to become more confident and boost my self-esteem. I recognized that change would never happen until I took action.

Instead of sitting around and feeling sorry for myself, I began to study the habits of confident people, and implement them into my own life. Sure enough, my level of confidence massively increased over several weeks.

Maybe you’re like my past-self. You want to become a lot happier and optimistic each day. But for one reason or another, you don’t know where to start.

Let me help you. Write down a list of things in your life that you want to change. For example, you might want to improve your confidence, mental health, or anything else that’s incredibly important.

Then, all you need to do is write down the steps to get from where you are to where you want to be.

Practice Gratitude Each Morning

“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive — to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” — Marcus Aurelius

When you focus all of your mental energy on everything that’s going wrong, you’re not allowing yourself to be thankful for everything that’s going well. So if you want to be much happier each day, practicing gratitude is undoubtedly an excellent place to start.

For example, I take a few minutes each morning to be thankful for my family, friends, and other people that I care about. Also, I’ll practice gratitude for something that happened in my career or relationship.

You get the idea. You don’t need to sit down for thirty minutes and meditate or do anything else that people on the internet might say. Instead, just take a few moments to be grateful, and your mindset will quickly improve for the better.

Let Go Of Everything That You Cannot Control

“There is only one way to happiness, and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power or our will.” — Epictetus

A great truth of life is that we often get frustrated by events and circumstances that we cannot change. But instead of worrying about everything that you cannot control, I’ve learned that a much better solution is to focus solely on what you can. For example:

  • Unfortunately, you can’t control what other people think about you. But when you stop allowing your self-worth to be dictated by other people’s opinions, their negative comments won’t really matter.
  • You cannot change the fact that there’s a global pandemic going on right now. However, you can prepare for a potential stay-at-home order by finding various hobbies to keep your mind occupied.
  • You cannot control what happens during your commute. You might get stuck in traffic due to an accident on the highway or a fallen tree. But you can find a variety of audiobooks to help you learn and become a better person.

So if you want to be much happier, start by focusing on everything you can do to improve a situation. Because even if you only become 1% happier each day, the power of compound interest will create an incredibly different life over time.

Marcus Aurelius once said, “you have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” Without knowing you, I can tell you’re destined to live an incredibly happy life.

You can fulfill your potential. You can wake up smiling, become more optimistic, and live each day with a sense of gratitude. All you need to do is identify your ideal self’s habits and then implement them into your own life.

Do that, and you’ll look back at your progress with pride, knowing that you changed every aspect of your life and mindset for the better.
