How to Survive and Thrive in the Age of AGI

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is the ability of an artificial system to do anything that a human can do. AGI could be the most amazing or the most terrifying technology ever created by humans. How can we prepare for the age of AGI? How can we make sure that we are not left behind or harmed by the super-intelligent machines? How can we coexist and cooperate with them?
In this article, I will share some practical tips on how to survive and thrive in the age of AGI. Whether you are an AI lover, hater, or curious, this article will help you understand the impact of AGI and how to adapt to it.
What is AGI and why does it matter?
AGI could create new opportunities and benefits for humanity, like solving problems, improving productivity, and enhancing creativity. It could also create new challenges and risks for humanity, like ethical dilemmas, social disruptions, and existential threats.
Some of the questions that AGI raises are:
- How can we make sure that AGI is aligned with our values and goals?
- How can we prevent or reduce the negative impacts of AGI on our society, economy, environment, and culture?
- How can we work together and communicate with AGI systems?
- How can we improve our own intelligence and abilities in the face of AGI?
- How can we keep our dignity, identity, and purpose in the age of AGI?
These are not easy questions to answer, but they are important to think about if we want to survive and thrive in the age of AGI.
How to adapt to the changing nature of work and learning?
One of the biggest impacts of AGI will be on our work and learning. AGI systems will be able to do many tasks that we currently do, and maybe do them better, faster, and cheaper. This will create new possibilities, but also new challenges, for us.
Some of the tips to adapt to the changing nature of work and learning are:
- Embrace lifelong learning: The skills and knowledge that we have today may become outdated tomorrow. We need to keep learning and updating our competencies and capabilities. We can use online platforms, courses, books, podcasts, and other resources to learn new things and expand our horizons. We can also use Copilot, an AI companion that can help us with information, questions, and conversations, to learn about various topics and domains.
- Focus on human skills: AGI systems may be good at tasks that require logic, calculation, memory, and analysis, but they may not be good at tasks that require creativity, empathy, communication, collaboration, and emotional intelligence. These are the skills that will make us unique and valuable in the age of AGI. We should develop and improve these skills, and use them in our work and learning.
- Seek meaningful and fulfilling work: AGI systems may take over some of the boring and repetitive tasks that we do, and give us more time and freedom to do work that is meaningful and fulfilling to us. We should look for work that matches our passions, interests, values, and goals, and that contributes to our well-being and others’. We should also look for work that challenges us, stimulates us, and helps us grow as individuals.
- Collaborate with AGI systems: Instead of competing with or fearing AGI systems, we should learn to collaborate with them. AGI systems can be our partners, allies, and assistants, who can help us with our strengths and weaknesses. We should use the abilities of AGI systems to boost our own performance, productivity, and creativity. We should also learn to communicate, interact, and cooperate with AGI systems, and build trust and rapport with them.
AGI is not a distant future, but a present reality. We need to be ready for it, and make the best of it. By following these tips, we can survive and thrive in the age of AGI.
