How to Stay Motivated to Write Each Day
A few tips on how to remain consistent as a writer.
Everyone chooses to write for many different reasons, whether you are working on your latest book, updating your blog, producing content for a client, or writing about your daily experiences. However, one of the biggest struggles with writing is learning how to stay motivated to write each day. Dealing with a lack of creative ideas or various distractions can make it a challenge to turn all of your thoughts into words on a computer screen.
Keeping a few tips in mind can help you overcome these common challenges and allow you to freely write each day.
Set Small Goals While you may want to write 3,000 words each day, it is always a good idea to set small goals and eventually work your way up to a larger word count. Keeping your goals small allows you to avoid feeling overwhelmed while also giving you a sense of accomplishment once you reach your objective. Creating goals also gives you a sense of direction, which is essential in helping you become a prolific writer.
Reduce Distractions Eliminating distractions while you are writing isn’t always possible, especially if you are writing from home. However, you can reduce distractions to help you focus and achieve your goals. A few simple ways to minimize distractions include putting your cellphone on silent and setting aside a certain amount of time to write each day. You can also use various apps to block websites while you write, as checking the news or social media for a few minutes can quickly turn into an hour before you even realize it.
Develop Good Writing Habits Finding ways to make writing easier is essential for anyone, whether you are a brand new writer or have been working in the industry for the last twenty years. A few ways to help you write better is to always create an outline in advance and avoid self-editing your work until you are finished. Taking a few breaks throughout the day is also important in helping you feel refreshed and avoiding burnout. Create a Publishing Schedule One of the best ways to hold yourself accountable is to create a publishing schedule each week. Setting up a schedule provides you with structure while also allowing you to visualize your plan. For example, you may want to write one article for Medium on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday while writing for your clients on Tuesday and Thursday. Ultimately, you have the freedom to set up a schedule that best meets your needs, as everyone’s writing journey is unique.
Understanding how to stay motivated to write on a consistent basis is essential in helping you reach your short-term and long-term goals as a writer. Setting attainable goals, minimizing distractions, developing good writing habits, and creating a publishing schedule all play an important role in helping you become a much more consistent writer.
