How To Share Love On Valentine’s Day
And lower your expectations
I can’t recall a good memory about Valentine’s Day. My first boyfriend was once angry at me for one of his mysterious reasons and decided to punish me by inviting a single friend to our Valentine’s Day dinner. They spent the evening talking about football.
My next boyfriend said he thought Valentine’s Day was a commercial event and he didn’t t want to celebrate it, to avoid chaos and crowded places. Of course, I accepted his decision, I am a good girl! Then he forgot about the celebration and about his words and asked a friend to come out with us for dinner, so we spent the evening looking for a table since all restaurants were fully booked.
And then… shops and supermarkets full of red roses and heart-shaped chocolates, which I love, and I felt so sad since, after so many years, I was still single. So, if I was in a couple or single nothing changed: there was no celebration of the day, and it never made me feel happy.
Yet, one of the pleasures of time is that it helps you give value to important things. Therefore, this year I decided that on Valentine’s Day I will write warm messages to my girlfriends, to remind them how precious they are. I will send them pictures of red hearts and roses. I am sure they will laugh at me and with me, but they will be happy since I guess their boyfriends forgot about it!
Thank you Trista Signe Ainsworth for reminding us about the magic of hearts, and Ellie Jacobson for the prompt about February 14th.
