How to Shake off Inertia and Start Writing
You have everything you need to start right now.
If there was a world record for signing up for writing courses and not finishing them, I’d be a strong contender for the gold medal.
“The first draft is just you telling yourself the story.”
— Terry Pratchett
If you’re anything like me, you probably have tried multiple times in the past and fallen at one of the first hurdles.
But there are some small pointers that you need to remember, in order to shake off whatever is holding you back and just write already.
1. Give yourself a reading time limit
You have to stop reading and start writing. Okay, you have an insatiable curiosity. All writers have, it’s in your DNA.
But set yourself a timer, and stick to it, or you’ll be forever devouring the work of other writers instead of creating your own.
2. If you enjoy writing, you’re already a writer
Simply the act of writing makes you a writer. There is no specific measure of success that will make anyone a master of words.
We might admire already written work, but the beauty of writing is that nobody else can tell your story, except you.
3. You only need the bare minimum of knowledge to begin something
If we were all expected to know everything when we started a new job, or a new course of study, a new degree or anything at all, it would be crazy and impossible.
When you begin writing, don’t expect to know everything, especially not about the art of writing. You only need a grain of understanding to take the first step.
4. The learning curve is steep and will leave you breathless at how fast you climb it
Like climbing a mountain, you just start moving and enjoy the process. There is no end goal until you set one. The joy is all in the climb and what you discover on the way. Once you’ve reached one peak, there are plenty more you can choose to climb.
If you find yourself getting all tied up in knots, trying to decide what, and how to write, instead ask yourself the question “Why do I want to write about?”
If the answer is because it makes you feel alive, or because it makes your heart soar, why would you not do it all of the time?
