How to set goals to stay committed

Be SMART

Ever made new years resolutions only to quit them by february? We need to set our goals right in order to achieve them.

Take some time to clarify your goal setting before running into them blindly. When applied properly you won’t have to waste your time and energy to figure out what to do each day.

“If a man not knows to which port he sails, no wind is favourable” — Seneca

A way of doing so it to apply the SMART approach, which I’ll explain in the following.

Specific

Vaguely formulated goals aren’t attainable. It is easy not to be detemined if you can’t tell whether you reached your goal. Setting the goal to do more sport is easily set. But what does ‘more’ mean to you?

Try to be as specific as possible. Answer these questions and be precise:

  • What is it?
  • How to attain it?
  • Why is it important to you?
  • When must it be finished?
  • Who is involved?
  • Where will it take place?

Measurable

Somehow you must be able measure your progress. Once you can tell that you are progressing you receive a positive feedback and feel motivated to move on. You can also tell where to focus on next. From time to time check your progress, start do document what efforts you made to get closer to your goal. Evaluate if your methods are working and figure out what to adapt.

Attainable

Make sure that you are the only component in the equation that determines the outcome of your goal. If there are other factors on which you do not have any influence attaining you goal is less possible.

You can only control what’s under your control! Do not waste your energy on trying to change what lies outside of your influence.

So, make sure that your goal is actually attainable.

Relevant

When having more than one goal, think about your priorities and figure out if there is a better time to work on this certain goal. Find the balance between too easy and too challenging to keep you motivation up.

Time

Ask yourself what you want to achieve in a certain amount of time and start to break down the time frame into smaller intervals. Then figure out what you can do in the ever smaller getting time frames to achieve your goal.

If you have a 1-year project, ask yourself what you can achieve each month. Then break it down to weekly, and daily tasks that can be attained to meet your goals.

Impose yourself with a deadline. If there is no pressure nothing will hinder your from pointless postponing.
