How to Serve Others With Passion and Purpose?

Discover your Dharma type

“If you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, go together. “— Cory Booker

New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, quoted this as “an African saying.”

Lady Gaga posted it on Twitter (X).

It attracted a lot of attention and some criticism.

The quote means you can do things yourself to get things done quickly.

But working with others in a team is better if you aim for big, lasting successes.

Your Dharma personality types are like a team within you.

Embrace them, learn from others, and build connections beyond the surface.

“Your passion becomes your purpose when you use it to help others.” — Jay Shetty

In Eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism, Dharma is about finding one’s universal purpose (or duty).

It’s nothing other than your unique calling.

Dharma connects your passion, skills, compassion, and purpose.

What’s Your Dharma Personality Type?

In essence, as Jay Shetty said,

Dharma becomes a passion for the service of others.

Your passion becomes your purpose when you use it to help those around you.

According to Vedic Hinduism, your Dharma is to serve others wherever you can.

It’s not just about serving but also about not expecting anything in return for your service.

It combines your natural inclinations, lifestyle, and strengths to serve others.

It’s like finding one’s “natural destiny.”

Think of it as a picture that helps you understand who you are.

This image is created by the things you have inherited from your family.

And also through the things you experience and the decisions you make in your life.

Every person and his or her personality is unique.

However, he or she can be associated with one of the four Dharma personality types identified in Vedic Hinduism.

I started reading the book “Think Like a Monk” last November and finished it last week.

In the book, Shetty has devoted an entire chapter to types.

Each type has a typical communication style with both strengths and challenges.

The concept is important in helping people to understand themselves better.

It can support them in finding their true calling to move forward.

Your “Natural Destiny”

Dharma signifies striving to act according to a person’s virtues, calling, and the “right way of living.

It’s a call to align your actions with your innate sense of morality and purpose.

Understanding your Dharma personality type is like holding a mirror to your true self.

It opens the door to deeper self-knowledge.

The ancient Vedic seers divided dharma into four archetypes.

These correspond to the natural laws of the four elements: Fire, Air, Earth, and Water.

The corresponding personality profiles are the Leader, Guide, Creator, and Maker.

Thus, each of the four types embodies a range of drives and talents to enhance different facets of life and humanity.

For example,

Life is impossible if the “Creator” does not provide for basic needs such as food and shelter.

The “Maker” provides beauty and joy to enrich life.

The “Leader” makes sure that everything is organized and disciplined so that everyone benefits.

The “Guide” helps everyone to develop their full potential and evolve into a better and freer society.

When you embrace your Dharma, you can understand yourself better.

It paves the way for meaningful connections with others.

It’s about finding your unique path and going far in the spirit of togetherness.

1. The Leader

First, we have the leader.

Someone who is naturally drawn to lead, inspire, and engage others.

You may be a leader if you are comfortable in a leadership role and enjoy organizing and directing.

You could be a politician, lawyer, judge, or work in law enforcement.

You can adapt to these roles with little effort.

You are a natural leader of people, movements, groups, or your family.

You use your courage, strength, and determination to protect those less privileged.

You are led by higher morals and values and seek to enforce them wherever you go for the greater good.

You are good at providing structures and frameworks to facilitate people's growth.

You utilize the strength of your team to extend your positive leadership.

Strengths:

Leaders, you are the architects of order.

You are organized, directive, and goal-oriented.

Your interaction with others reflects your drive to achieve goals.

People look up to you, they follow your leadership.

This is because your communication style is forceful.

It reflects your commitment to your mission.

Your organizational skills are second to none.

Whether in your family, in your social environment, or at work, you bring structure and framework that facilitate growth.

Those who are guided by your vision are not just followers.

They become loyal allies who speak the same language.

Challenges:

Leader, the biggest challenge in working with you might be that you are a little domineering.

Questions and contradictions?

You see them as disloyalty.

As a result, some people oppose you openly or behind your back.

2. The Guide

Next, we have the Guide.

Someone who likes to learn and pass on knowledge.

This could be your type if you are drawn to teaching, coaching, or mentoring roles.

Being a dominant guide means being naturally comfortable and drawn to learning and sharing knowledge.

You want to bring out the best in those around you.

You are passionate about helping them discover meaning, fulfillment, and purpose.

You like to be alone to reflect and learn.

You value knowledge and wisdom more than objects and status, such as fame, power, money, and security.

You like intellectual pursuits in your free time.

It could be reading, debating, and discussing ideas, philosophies, and solutions.

Strengths:

Guides, you think deeply and are passionate about learning.

You enjoy sharing your knowledge with others.

You genuinely want to help them find meaning and improve their lives.

You communicate with inspiration.

Your style is to express your observations without judgment.

Challenges:

Well, deep thought can lead to distraction.

You might give uninvited advice or make assumptions.

You know that you have more knowledge and wisdom than most people.

Therefore, you tend to give advice, make assumptions, and listen attentively.

3. The Creator

Let us now talk about the Creator.

A creator is someone comfortable with brainstorming and innovative solutions.

You love expanding your network.

You are excited by the innovative solutions that others can benefit from.

You could be a salesperson, marketer, entertainer, producer, or entrepreneur.

You can adapt to these roles with little effort.

Whatever professional, family, or social position you find yourself in, you are a natural negotiator and influencer!

You use your skills and persuasiveness to convince people to do things or make the best decisions for them.

You are driven by money, pleasure, and success.

You are hardworking and determined to excel in your role or field.

Strengths:

Creators, your interpersonal communication is to the point.

You aren’t afraid to show emotion and value the contribution of others.

You work hard and play just as hard, always on the move.

The preferences and interests of the group are more important to you than your own.

Challenges:

You tend to be guided by your feelings.

You can also be indecisive on your own.

You rely on the recommendations and opinions of other people.

Sometimes, you find it difficult to argue in an organized and clear manner.

You are not good at dealing with conflict and try to avoid it at all costs.

4. The Maker

Lastly, we have the Maker.

Someone who likes to invent and implement ideas.

Being a Maker, you are naturally comfortable and attracted to inventing, supporting, and implementing ideas and solutions that benefit others.

You could be a doctor, a nurse, a social worker, an artist, a carpenter, a cook, or any one of many service-oriented jobs.

You can adapt to these roles without much effort.

You take immense pride in your craft and your ability to serve others.

You use your skills to create satisfaction, well-being, stability, and security for yourself and others.

You choose meaningful goals to pursue and lead teams to provide the best service and support to others.

Strengths:

Makers, your communication style is logical and analytical.

You base your decisions on facts and evidence.

You prefer to be guided by protocols and guidelines.

As a result, you can come across as rigid and process-oriented rather than people-oriented.

You want to be precise, do things right, avoid mistakes, and expect others to do the same.

You are meticulous and detail-oriented and prefer structures and protocols.

Challenges:

Others often perceive your communication style as rigid, one-sided, and unyielding.

You like what is familiar and often discourage or reject creative, new ideas.

You may take longer to make decisions if you don’t have all the data.

You expect consistent results from others and overlook their circumstances and interests.

Final Thoughts

There is no right or wrong Dharma type.

Your personality is as unique as a fingerprint.

No profile is better than another.

Embark on the journey and learn from every type in you.
