The Power of Effective Communication
How To Sell!
The audience or the person?
“Selling is the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) Skill." According to Tricia Biz. This is absolutely true!
Being able to convince and persuade people to take out money from their pockets or accounts to buy something is a difficult but incredible skill. It’s also one which you won’t get taught in schools.
Now, I know many of us will be like “I don’t actually sell anything, or do I even need to sell anything? “
Well, no! You don’t need to sell something, but believe it or not, the money you so much need is lying there in the pocket of someone else. So you see?
You might not have something to sell right now, but at some point or another, you’ll definitely have to sell something or help someone sell something.
So with that being said, let’s proceed.
Selling is simply getting PEOPLE to buy from you. Now, the keyword there is ‘people’. Not, robots, not animals, but people. This means that you have to communicate! Whether you’re a copywriter or a sales manager, you need to communicate.
So what’s the major thing that should come to your mind when communicating with people?
Emotions!!
Humans are creatures of emotions. So you need to appeal to their emotions to get them to really take action.
Are you with me? Good.
All I’m trying to say is that you need to get involved. You’re dealing with persons so, get personal!
I have a friend who sells clothes and I recently discovered that she’d been advertising her products the wrong way all along.
She’d put up a photo of her products and write, “ Quality wears, buy now!! Come and patronize your girl. “
I talked with her one day and asked if she could make her adverts a little more compelling, more personal. She said she could, and I gave her some examples and insights on what to do. She didn’t really see much of the difference it would make but she agreed anyway.
The next day, I was scrolling through my feeds and I saw an image showing beautiful, exquisite clothing, and a caption which read:
“Why not put a SMILE on the face of that your friend celebrating their birthday this month?
You can never go wrong with the right shirt and quality trousers, specially packaged for YOU.
Different sizes available. What more? These are almost FREE. You don’t have to empty your bank account!
Place an order NOW and retain that LOVE!"
I quickly clicked to take action before I checked and saw it was actually my friend’s advert! I was stunned.
In less than 24 hrs, I got a message from her thanking me and saying she made massive sales that day compared to the others.
I never knew it would work so quickly! Now, that’s what getting personal looks like. How many times did you see the word ‘You’ there?
So you see, whether you’re engaged in advertising, marketing, or sales, you need to get personal. When something becomes personal, it becomes important.
You get personal by showing people how they can benefit from what you’re selling or how it can affect their personal lives.
Dr. Qubein wrote in his book, How To Be A Good Communicator:
"All communication is personal. A mass audience doesn't have a mind. The individuals within that audience have minds. A speech, a broadcast, or a piece of writing, no matter how polished and professional, will have no measurable effect unless it connects with the mind of individuals…”
He also went further to say, “The message sender (or seller, in our case) must know how to address the personal concerns of the intended message receiver (or buyer, also in our case). “
“Remember, people, do things for their own reasons; not for yours or mine. “
