Specific steps and what you need

When it comes to publishing your book, there is no “right” or “wrong” way to publish. It’s up to you whether you self-publish or go for traditional publishing, also often called “trade publishing.” Both options will end with you being a published author, and you’ll need to choose which way works best for your book and what you’re hoping to get out of or accomplish with your book.

In terms of your goals for the book, if you’re planning to use your book as a marketing tool for you and your business, to get exposure, build your brand, gain credibility in your industry, position yourself as a thought leader, and potentially open doors to public speaking, and you want to get it out faster, self-publishing may be the best option for you.

Self-publishing allows you to:

  • Have more control, both creative and content-wise.
  • Accelerate the timeline and have your book out sooner and pick your own launch date.
  • Keep all rights and royalties to your book.
  • But requires you to self-fund the process.

Steps of the Self-publishing process, in order:

  • Write the manuscript
  • Self-edit/beta reader feedback
  • Professional editing
  • Cover design (can happen at any point in the process, but the final wraparound cover for the physical book can’t be finalized until formatting is complete)
  • Formatting
  • Upload to Amazon (includes needing book description, picking 2 categories, and deciding the price) and wait for approval
  • Ask for reviews
  • Create an author page on Amazon’s Author Central (or connect the new book with previously-created author page)
  • Market your book

The things you need to self-publish on Amazon:

  • Two versions of your formatted book; one as a MOBI or EPUB file (for ebook) and the other as a PDF file (for the physical version/paperback).
  • Front cover in JPG format (for ebook) and wraparound cover with a spine in JPG format (for physical version/paperback).
  • Summary/book description (same as what is on the back cover of the physical book).
  • The two Amazon categories you want to publish in.
  • The price you want to sell the ebook and paperback versions for.

You do not need to buy an ISBN, Amazon will provide you with one.

What about traditional publishing?

I am happy to break down that process, as well! In fact, I already have. In my new book, Concept to Conclusion: How to Write a Book, coming out 11/26, I compare self-publishing and traditional publishing with the pros and cons of both, plus how to decide which might be a better fit for you, and also discuss vanity publishers and what to look out for.

The book also breaks down the entire writing, editing, and marketing process!

It’s pretty awesome if I do say so myself (which I just did) and I can’t wait to hear what YOU think.
