Choose A Destination

Before you layout a budget, it’s very important to select a destination. I think the destination is the most important part of the plan outside of setting aside the money itself. The reason for this is in some personal examples. First, in 2018, I spent about $3,000 on a trip to Germany for 2 weeks. That same $3,000 could get me a month or longer stay in Costa Rica. Not that Germany is super expensive (about the same prices as the U.S.) but some places will allow you a longer stay because your money stretches further.

Setting Money Aside

Now this step is obviously the most important but now comes the saving part. There are two steps that will help you achieve your savings goals, and those are consistency and lack of access. Consistency is obvious because what you want to do is save a small amount each week or paycheck (especially if you are on a lower income). Put back what you can afford and don’t be afraid to cut back! Even if you only cut $55 per week somewhere out of your budget that’s $2,860 after a year of saving. If you are on a lower income you may have to make sacrifices but I promise it will be worth it.

Next, is not being able to access your money. I’m guilty of this too because it’s super easy to just move money from savings when you see an item you want but the key is to put your money in a hard-to-access place so you aren’t tempted to spend it. My recommendation is something like a high-yield savings account where it takes around 3 business days to transfer money to your main bank. That helped me avoid the temptation.

The Last Step. Enjoy!

If you made it to step 3, congrats! It took a lot of discipline for you to make it to this point. I think a lot of people complicate this process of saving money for that once-in-a-lifetime trip because they think it has to be expensive without ways of lowering their trip costs, but I think breaking the process down to simple terms like this makes it easy for anyone to accomplish. After all, these are baby steps that can be easily followed if travel is what you desire. Overall, I hope this article helps any readers who like myself, struggled to save money for travel, especially the way our economy is right now.
