It was 1996 and the company was facing bankruptcy.
“We can’t go on like this,” the management said — “We need him back”.
So they called him back.
They bought his company and made him CEO again.
After a decade, the founder was back at the top of his old company.
Everybody was waiting.
The world was waiting.
What will he do?
What will he add to the company now?
Turns out, he didn’t add anything when he first came back.
Because that’s not what the company needed.
He noticed that employees were going in many different directions.
Lost between different projects, ideas, and goals.
So he focused on cutting off what was useless.
Eliminating what wasn’t necessary.
Removing distractions.
And regaining focus.
So they could do remarkable work and impact billions of people.
After Steve Jobs came back as Apple’s CEO, the brand grew exponentially, dominating the technology market in the following decades.
The secret?
Harnessing the power of focus.
Focusing is about saying no. — Steve Jobs
When you’re focused on something, you plunge into it and eliminate anything that distracts or diverts your attention. When you’re unfocused, you are easily distracted by other things that keep you away from achieving your purpose.
Being concentrated allows you to be intentional with what you are doing, choosing only the best tasks that will help you reach your goals.
The problem with focusing is that it’s difficult to do, especially in the hectic, fast-paced world we live in today.
There’s always something new and exciting happening on the internet.
New stories appear constantly on TV, radios, and newspapers, thus capturing everyone’s attention.
On top of that, there’s an onslaught of emails coming into our inboxes every day (that we feel obligated to read or respond to immediately).
And last but not least, we have social media apps.
It’s hard to focus when there’s so much going on around us all the time.
That said, focusing is also one of the most important things we need to do if we want to achieve our goals faster.
Successful people do this all the time.
They say no to things they don’t need to do so that they can say yes to the things they really want to do.
The things that get them closer to their goals.
They eliminate all distractions, so they can focus their attention on what really matters in their lives.
Do you struggle with concentrating?
Would you like to get more done during your day?
It might be a focusing problem.
If so, think about cutting off what you don’t really need.
Make a list of all the things you’re doing, and evaluate what’s working and what’s not.
Cut off the unnecessary.
Eliminate it.
Let go of the urge to multitask.
Say no to unimportant tasks.
Focus on what really moves the needle.
So you can say yes to what matters the most.
And truly do remarkable work.
