How To Reach Out With Love Just By Making a Call
Friends and flowers
Caterina was my only friend and schoolmate during my university years.
We used to meet at my house or at the department, to study and share the disappointment and anxiety we had to face. We feared we could never be able to complete our university career because everything seemed too difficult for us.
We were afraid of being on the wrong path, wasting our time studying modern literature and then, what kind of job could we get? It was a sincere friendship, we showed each other our weaknesses, and felt stronger together. We were one, against all the other students that were passing the exams faster than we did.
Time went by and proved that we were wrong because both of us successfully completed our studies. We met at her graduation, and then life, our new jobs and families separated us. We kept great memories and deep affection.
After a very long time, this summer I met an ex-colleague who lives in the same village as Caterina. He gave me some updates on her life: she got married and has a daughter. She is teaching English in a high school. That is exactly the life Caterina wanted to have, so I imagined she could be very happy.
Then one day my ex-colleague sent me a message with her phone number. I immediately contacted Caterina. She was crying with joy! It was a call full of love, of tears, of memories of a past that we experienced as difficult, but which was full of energy, passion and dreams.
All our fears turned out to be unrealistic since we both have a job we like and a family we love. It was as if nothing had changed, even when we were talking of the people we lost during these years. It was so emotional and sweet!
We decided we would meet in a few months. It is a typical plan I have with people, and then nothing happens because we are all too busy. Yet this time we were both ready to make it real.
During the call, she told me she still had the bunch of dried flowers I gave her for her graduation, so I bought a new one for our first meeting, to give fresh nourishment to our friendship. Since then, we are always in contact and we are soon organizing a dinner with our families. We will bore them with all our stories and memories!
Life starts again, sometimes you just need to have a telephone number, and dial it!
