How To Overcome Writer’s Block on Medium When It Happens to You

Sharing some ideas that had been helpful for myself

With regards to my previous article on:

I will give you some tips to overcome writer’s block that has worked well for me:

1. Turn a subject into a question.

Freewriting is a technique where we can set a timer for 10 to 15 minutes and write on any topics or ideas that come to our minds. But do it by turning a subject into a question.

Try it. It will help you overcome the temporary blockage in your mind.

For example, when the word “education” comes to your mind. Try the following:

- Is formal education most important in our life?

- Is education necessary for jobs?

- What is the ultimate purpose of education?

Another example of the word is “purpose”. Try the following:

- What is the purpose of earning an income?

- What purposes are there when we write an article?

- What could be the real purpose of joining Medium?

I believe you get my point about turning a topic into a question.

2. Change your environment

There may be a fixed place where you do your writing. Some people do well when they change their environment. Go for a walk in your neighbourhood or write in a cafe or library.

A change in the environment can stimulate our creativity. It puts us in a different frame of mind to ponder various subjects. So bring your laptop and go somewhere instead of your usual place.

For me, my writing is always in a room. Hence if I need to change my environment, I will bring my laptop to my dining table in the hall, or onto my bed, with my back leaning against the headboard of my bed.

3. Read

Reading what others write often gives me some ideas on what to write. When you read somebody’s topic on “What Brings Us Happiness”, you are reading someone’s perspective.

When you write on a similar topic, you are sharing with the world your perspective on the topic, which will be unique.

Let me give you some headers of topics that others have written:

- 8 Words to Change Your Life

- The Importance of Good Habits in Life

- 3 Things I’d Do Differently If I Were 20 Again

- Little Things That Count

- Money Can’t Buy Happiness

Can you think of something to write by looking at the above titles?

In conclusion

Writer’s block will happen when we are unaware. Knowing how to overcome this is always helpful in our writing journey.

Never give up.

If there is a will, there’s a way to overcome writer’s block.
