How To Optimize Your Website and Generate Leads
Best web design practices for your business
Ask any writer. You only have one page to really grab your reader. Some otherwise wonderful stories get completely missed simply because the reader wasn’t engaged right at the beginning.
When trying to build leads from your business website, a similar philosophy is in play. You need to make a positive first impression and demonstrate right from the beginning that your service stands out. What you want is a utilitarian (meaning it works and is easy to navigate) website that’s also visually impressive.
Make good design choices
When designing your website, consider these tips.
Consistent branding and design
A good presentation makes a good first impression. Having a consistent presentation builds on that.
When branding your website keep the following in mind.
- Place your logo in the same location on each page
- Clicking on the logo should always lead back to the home page
- Use the same font on every page
- Use the same color scheme on all pages
Don’t overwhelm with choices
You probably offer several different tech services for your customers. But having too many options to choose from on a single page is overwhelming. It’s best to break those services down by grouping them by category. This makes it easier to navigate the site. (Oh, and do not opt for infinite scroll. That’s way too much for a single page.)
Here’s an example of clustering choices. If you offer data protection, IT procurement and cloud services, you could break those down into broad topic pages. Like this.

Your customers will spend less time searching for what they’re interested in and more time finding out how you can help.
Use negative space
White space is your friend.
Be sure to write in short, punchy paragraphs. Never include long, solid blocks of text. As for graphics, try now to crowd your text. Spread them out a bit, leaving plenty of space free on the page.
Put a human face on it
People like human faces.
Including pictures of people not only puts a human face to your services but also begins to tell a story. You’re not just “tech support,” right? You’re people invested in providing an important set of services.

Include plenty of smiling faces.
It’s best if they’re actually your smiling faces. Stock photography will work in a pinch, but actual pictures of you and your staff are always preferable.
Providing useful content
In addition to design, you should consider your content.
Who you are and what you offer
Three important things to include on your website are a good description of who you are, how you work, and what products/services you offer.
Your company bio should give the client a clear impression that you’re a professional organization. Your process describes not only your business philosophy but how you approach offering solutions to your clients. Your list of products and services should be thoughtfully planned into categories that are easy to select in order to learn more information about them.
Resources for readers
How did your client find your site? Did they just Google “IT support.” Or maybe they came across some helpful content you published on your company’s blog? Helpful content draws people to your site organically.
And by helpful, we mean freely offering actionable advice readers can put to use right then and there. Like, oh, I don’t know . . . a piece on how to convert leads using best web design practices. While many companies offer helpful blog articles, others also offer downloadable ebooks or whitepapers that tackle topics that are important to their customers in more detail.
If your company has strong graphic design capabilities, infographics are also popular resources to provide visitors to your site.

Don’t forget the obvious
Nothing kills leads faster than making it hard to get in touch with you.
Have a Contact page that offers multiple methods of reaching you including a phone number, address, e-mail contacts or an online contact form. And make sure there’s a link to your Contact page on every other page.
Building strong leads
The goal is simple.
Step one, get their attention. Step two, lead them to action. The design of your website can help accomplish both. By applying planning and forethought to your business’s web design, you can bring in more viewers and stand a greater probability of turning these viewers into customers and partners.
You don’t necessarily need an expensive, boutique web design agency to start hitting these goals. Look at your website and refer back to this article and see how you might be able to tweak or reorganize your site to bring in and retain more viewers.
Further down the line, you may want to see what services are available to you to truly maximize your reach and build strong leads.
