How To Not Become A Leader
You’ve seen too much about how to be one
Not everyone is a leader. And not all leaders are born as leaders. If you ask me, no leaders are born leaders. All leaders are made.
Who Is A Leader?
The definition might change from person to person, team-to-team, and organization-to-organization.
There is no single definition for a leader.
A leader is a person who defines the goals for a team.
A leader a person who enables his/her team to achieve their goals and ambitions.
A leader is a person who brings back the team from a time of difficulty to glory.
The right definition of a leader might be one of these, some of these, these, or none of these. My point is, if “Define a leader” was asked for SATs, you’re probably fucked. There. Is. No. Single. Correct. Answer.
Think about it. If there was a single definition for the word “leader”, or what it means to “lead” a team, then everyone would have been a leader. The internet would be flooded with content having roadmaps and How-To’s on becoming a leader. There’s already an enormous volume of content available online along these lines, but none of them is going to be a sure-shot guide for you on how to become a leader.
Not everyone is a leader. And not all leaders are born as leaders. If you ask me, no leaders are born leaders. All leaders are made.
The Making Of A Leader
If you think about people who you believe to be outstanding leaders, you’ll find an interesting pattern. Tell me what it is, because I couldn’t find one.
When Jake Sully led the Navi against the humans to reclaim their home, he was a leader. When New Zealand was declared virus-free on 22 June 2020, Jacinda Ardern was a leader. When M.S. Dhoni led the Indian cricket team to victory, he was a leader. When she took Bumble from a startup to a billion-dollar company listed on Nasdaq, Whitney Wolf Herd was a leader.
Jake Sully was ousted from Pandora when he revealed his human identity. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was heavily criticized for not tackling housing shortages and child poverty, issues that she had pledged to address. M. S. Dhoni had faced heavy backlash for dropping senior players from the team to prepare the youngsters for the 2011 WC. Whitney was forced to quit a company which she co-founded, after facing severe sexual harassment.
The people I mentioned had made mistakes and/or faced adversities before becoming a leader. Some accomplished leaders have turned sour in their latter parts of their lives. There is no pattern. Stop waiting for one.
If you think about people who you believe to be great leaders, you’ll find an interesting pattern. Tell me what it is, because I can’t find one.
Takeaway
I don’t know if you’re a leader. But I know for a fact that if you have to act as a leader in your life, it will not stay the same forever. Every role comes with an expiry date.
To not be a leader, stop believing that you’re a leader. Accept that you know some things better than your team. That you have more experience in some things than your team. When it comes to the rest, you either have to step down the ladder and let someone else come up or take decisions relying heavily on the inputs from your team.
To not be a leader, stop pushing ideas down the throat of your team. Sure, your ideas might be great an awesome and inspiring, and whatnot, but even the most inspirable person will tire of too much inspiration.
Your voice is important. But sometimes, shouting isn’t the best way to get heard.
