How To Not Be A Shit Driver In Los Angeles Or Anywhere Really

Photo by Joey Kyber on Unsplash

I am just going to jump straight into this list:

  1. Common sense. This seems to be lacking.
  2. If it requires the use of blinkers, use them. It’s not optional!
  3. Don’t go cutting people off because you are about to miss your exit because you were on your phone or not paying attention. Your GPS will reroute you I’m sure.
  4. Don’t be the prick who is speeding in and out of traffic at any moment about to create an accident. Wake up a bit earlier if you are running late to work.
  5. When you slam on your brakes because you weren’t paying attention it causes a ripple effect and all of us driving behind you will most likely have to do the same thing and risk being rear ended.
  6. Don’t drive under the influence. If you think you “are safe to drive” and have to utter that sentence, find a ride home. Never take the chance because your one night of less than sober driving can change not only your life but the lives of many others.
  7. You are supposed to stay within the lines. They are there to guide you. Stop using them as though they are an option.
  8. Don’t speed. It’s not usually that serious.
  9. You don’t get to make your own lanes. The median and shoulders are not express lanes for you to bypass traffic. EMERGENCY VEHICLES ONLY or if your car has broken down.
  10. LOOK where you are going! Don’t assume someone isn’t in your blind spot!
  11. Pedestrians still have the right of way even if you don’t want them to.

I know that I sound like an insensitive jackass. I know there are moments like a life or death situation like a family member having a heart attack in your car or a pregnant woman sitting next to you and about to turn it into a delivery room… but getting to your destination safely matters too. The other person driving in their car doesn’t know your situation. All they see is how you are playing defense and offense on the road like it’s the super bowl. With all of that being said, cars are machines and they can and have many times taken the lives of others. It’s better to get to your destination safely and in the most productive way for everyone on the road.

What it comes down to is don’t be stupid. I know this list seems obvious but I had an “almost accident” several times today while driving along the Los Angeles freeway system simply because other drivers were not paying attention and I am so thankful that I was. I want to get to my destination and continue on with my day but your reckless driving can affect all of us when out on the road.

So please remember to try and be safe out on the road. It’s not just your life at risk but everyone else who is out there as well. Be smart. Be safe. Be courteous. Be responsible.
