How to Network in a Virtual World
Making genuine connections without meeting face-to-face

I remember the good old days when networking meant dressing up in my best formal attire, heading to a conference, and exchanging business cards over cups of coffee. Fast forward to today, and the world has changed quite a bit! With technology taking over, many of us try networking in a virtual world. And I won’t lie – it can be a bit tricky. But here’s the good news: it’s totally possible to build meaningful relationships without ever meeting someone face-to-face. Here’s my take on it.

Why Virtual Networking?
First, let’s get this out of the way: why should we even consider virtual networking? Well, for starters, it’s the new normal. With many of us working from home, we’ve got to adapt. Plus, virtual networking can be super efficient. Think about it. No travel. No traffic. Just click a link, and you’re in a meeting with someone halfway around the world. Pretty cool, right?

Making The First Move
Starting a conversation online can feel a bit… weird. But just like in real life, it’s all about breaking the ice. Instead of a generic “Hello,” try sharing something interesting you’ve read recently or asking a thoughtful question related to your industry. Trust me, people love talking about things they’re passionate about.

Listening is Key
I’ve learned that good networking isn’t about talking – it’s about listening. When you’re in a virtual meeting or chat, really listen to what the other person is saying. This shows that you’re genuinely interested and can lead to deeper, more meaningful conversations.

Be Genuine
Let’s face it; we can usually tell when someone’s being fake. So, whether you’re chatting on Zoom or sending messages on LinkedIn, always be yourself. It’s okay to let your personality shine through. Authenticity goes a long way.

Follow Up
This one’s big. After a virtual chat, always send a quick thank you message. It could be as simple as, “Hey, it was great talking to you about [topic]. Let’s keep in touch!” This small gesture can make a big difference.

Tools of the Trade
There are so many tools out there for virtual networking. From LinkedIn to virtual conference platforms, it’s easier than ever to connect. I recommend trying out a few different ones and finding what works best for you. And don’t forget about good old email. It’s a classic for a reason.

Stay Active
Virtual networking isn’t a one-time thing. Stay active in online communities related to your field. Comment on posts, share interesting articles, and participate in online forums. The more you put yourself out there, the more you’ll get in return.

The Value of Virtual
I’ve made some amazing connections virtually over the past few years. Some of these have turned into business partnerships, while others have become genuine friendships. So, while I do miss the face-to-face chats over coffee, I’ve come to appreciate the value of virtual networking. It’s a world full of opportunities, and with a bit of effort, we can all make the most of it.
So, next time you’re hesitant about joining that virtual networking event, give it a shot. You never know who you might meet or what opportunities might come your way. Happy networking!
