How to Move Forward on the Road to Success
Don’t let these things get in your way!

Whether you’re building a business, looking for a new job, losing weight or developing good habits, it’s important to keep moving forward by taking one step at a time.
However, there are several things that can stop you from moving forward — or delay your progress.
Here’s how to recognize and deal with these factors as soon as they arise, so you move past them as quickly as possible.
1. Self-doubt
Self-doubt whispers in your ear, saying you’re not good enough. Self-doubt tells you you’ll never succeed so what’s the point in trying? Self-doubt tells you other people are much better than you.
We all have moments of self-doubt. Some people have more than others.
Don’t worry when you feel self-doubt. In fact, be happy because it’s a sign that you’re about to move forward. You wouldn’t be doubting yourself if you were doing something inside your comfort zone!
So, take that small step despite your self-doubt. Despite that annoying voice in your head telling you’re not good enough.
You are good enough just as you are, because you’re an individual who has a unique combination of talents, skills and abilities to offer the world.
2. Naysayers
Other people can discourage you from moving forward. They may give you all sorts of reasons why moving towards your goal isn’t a good idea. They may think they’re doing this to protect you, but they’re most likely doing it out of fear.
Deep down, they might think that you’ll no longer have time for them if you’re busy with your new business. Or they may be afraid that you’ll move away if you’re offered one of the jobs you’ve applied for.
So, by all means, listen to people’s advice but listen to your own advice more. If that inner voice is guiding you in a particular direction, move forward in that direction, no matter what other people may think, say or do.
3. Discouragement
Sometimes you start a project with great enthusiasm, and you have some initial success. Then, things start to get tough and discouragement knocks on your door.
You wonder if you should carry on. Are you wasting your time? Is this really the best way to go?
Discouragement is something we all go through. We need to see it for what it is — just our thoughts telling us things that aren’t necessarily true. We don’t need to listen to these thoughts. We can ignore them and just take the next step forward.
Sometimes we can also feel discouraged after receiving negative comments from other people. Weigh up these comments to see if they are justified. Ask the opinion of someone you trust if you’re still unsure.
You’ll realize that most negative comments are just personal opinions, perhaps made by a person who was having a bad day. They’re not necessarily a reflection of the truth and they shouldn’t stop you moving forward.
4. Comparison
You might see someone who is further along the road to success than you are and is younger than you. You might wonder how he or she reached that point and why he or she appears to be so successful, yet you aren’t.
Before you know it, you’re stuck in the downward spiral of comparison.
In the social media age, it’s very, very difficult not to compare yourself with others.
To move forward, remember we’re all individuals. We’ve all had different things happen to us in our lives. Yes, it might seem that some people have had an easier life than others, but we don’t know what issues they might be battling with under the surface.
You’re an individual and you’re moving forward at your own pace. This may be faster than some people and slower than others. But that doesn’t matter.
The important thing is that you’re moving forward.
It doesn’t matter what other people are doing or at what stage they’re at. Just focus on how you can move forward and commit yourself to consistent action.
Remind yourself that your path through life is different from everyone else’s, so there’s no point in comparing it to anyone else’s journey.
5. Disappointment or Rejection
A disappointment or a rejection can be hurtful, especially if you were pinning all your hopes on a promising business opportunity or an exciting new job.
After a disappointment or rejection, it can be hard to pick yourself up and take the next step forward. So, acknowledge your feelings and do something nice for yourself first.
Try not to take the disappointment or rejection personally. It doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you. It just means that it wasn’t the right move forward for you at this point in time.
Be glad that you now know this. Use this knowledge to decide on the next step forward, a step that may be much more suited to you than the one that led to the disappointment or rejection.
Conclusion
We all come up against outside forces that can distract us from our intentions and goals every single day. There is no way we can stop this. It’s part of life.
When you come up against one of these forces, try not to deny it or push it away. Accept it for what it is and decide that you’ll take the next step forward, no matter what. It might lead you into an unexpected new direction that will be much better for you than your previous direction.
Even if it leads to a dead end, you’ll be wiser and, like Thomas Edison, you’ll ultimately be able to say: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
In life, there are many, many opportunities to explore, and you never need to stop exploring. So, carry on taking small — or larger — steps forward despite self-doubt, discouragement, disappointment or rejection.
Continue to move forward even if you’re surrounded by naysayers and if you’re tempted to compare yourself to others.
You’ll learn a lot a long the way, and, ultimately you’ll succeed. Success may look different from how you imagined it, but how could you have imagined the winding road to success that taught you so much?
