How to Master Authenticity and Audience Rapport — Part 1
An Interview With Dr. Gary, The Speaker’s Mentor
I met Dr. Gary Wohlman in the mid 70’s in NYC at a party, where he was demonstrating a form of body therapy I’d never seen before.
Dedicated to learning innovative approaches to healing myself, this inspired me to learn this modality myself and develop expertise myself putting my own unique spin on it.
Years later, I came across Gary at a National Speakers Association Convention in NYC, and we became re-acquainted. Now, 50 years later, Dr. Gary Wohlman and I speak weekly, collaborating in many ways. He is a seasoned communications skills coach, and He specializes in enhancing the full-bodied engagement, interactive impact and effectiveness of any speakers live and recorded presentations. If your communication needs to go to greater levels of effectiveness, especially online, Gary can help you.
Gary has sent me, in response to my request transcripts of talks and interviews he has given over the decades. They are always insightful and invaluable.
This is Part 1 of a 5 Part Thread, on “How to Master Authenticity and Audience Rapport”
The words from this article are taken from the transcript of one of my teaching audios, entitled “Mastering Authenticity and Audience Rapport”: . The audio version can be found by visiting
The original audio is a direct transcription of Dr Gary’s presenting a breakout session to professional speakers at a National Speakers Association convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
TRANSCRIPTION: Female Host: Let me tell you about the presenter whom you’ve have selected for your last breakout workshop. Gary Wohlman is an innovative, international presentation coach who has been actively training fellow professional presenters, speakers and presidents of the National Speakers Association of North America, New Zealand, and now Australia since 1990.
I first met Gary in 1990 when I was Chapter Vice President in New South Wales, and he came to Sydney to run some workshops. People said, “Will you go see that guy?” And I went to see him. I thought I was a very good presenter. I was already making a living, not much of a one, but some. And the workshop that I did with Gary Wohlman at that time I credit with some major breakthroughs. Not just in my presentation style, but in my life, I think, in claiming who I am and in beginning the greater journey of going further and further within and bringing that further and further out. If that’s what you want to do, then you’re in the right room.
His clients include leading directors of companies as well as entrepreneurs, sales people and performers, and his programs with individuals and groups range from speech coaching to team-building, conflict resolution, and customer service. I have been happy to recommend Gary to my clients here in Australia and have done that. And he’s done some work with them that has been very fruitful. Having developed his own unique body-centered approach from a vast variety of performance-based athletic and counselling disciplines for nearly thirty years, Gary is known for his refreshing interactive approach of facilitating breakthroughs in matching a speaker’s message with his physical delivery.
I know one of Gary’s great talents is in a role of court jester. And you may find that he works to bring some of that out of you today. His dynamic caring manner creates a safe environment for people to move to whole new levels of rapport and connection with their audiences while discovering their own style of integrating verbal, vocal and visual messaging to maximum impact. So, please take his knowledge today, take his ideas, take whatever you possibly can of his skills while you have him with you and enjoy the gift that you’ll receive this afternoon from Gary Wohlman.
Dr Gary: Thank you. Thank you, Catherine. Welcome, everybody. If you would, come only a quarter of centimetre closer, everyone. This is going to be an intimate session. Interesting to see what you do with that. That’s fine, that’s great. It was the gesture that I wanted. This will be, as we’ve already begun, a participatory session. And, Catherine, thank you so much (where are you?) for that kind introduction, that generous introduction. We also have Seanny who will be assisting with the microphone because of plenty of opportunities for you to be an active part of this session in giving feedback to what you see and hear, and feel with your fellows taking breakthroughs in presentations.
