How to Make the Law of Attraction Work for You
The universe checked out. It’s all on you.
So you probably have a vision board stuck on the right side of your bedroom wall. Everything you ever dreamt of is on there. The lace detailing of your wedding dress, an accurate description of the man you will marry, and perhaps the car you intend to buy on your 25th birthday. Your dream job and some Pinterest cutouts of your ‘ Perfect home’.
You're a planner, I’m assuming, a meticulous one at that.
Consider this: You are required to choose between the life you currently live and the one on your vision board.
You’d choose the one on the vision board. Because that version of you has got their wits together, that person is a ‘better you’ and that person is probably the happiest, most fulfilled person on earth.
Let me repeat that.
Because that person is a better you and that person is probably the happiest, most fulfilled person on earth.
See how ridiculous that sounds. Why would the happiest, most fulfilled person on earth need a vision board? Sure, it’s an unlikely future projection of yourself- but it’s all you.
See, I’ve never really believed in manifestation. I usually leave it up to god to sort out all the monotonous details of my life and just hope for the best. But just like you, I often fantasize about what It would feel like to be that ‘improved’ version of myself. How it would feel to not trip down the stair at work in front of all my colleagues.
Actively setting small goals and conquering them
You don't need decorative boards hanging on your bedroom wall.
A vision is just a vision. Just as a map is just a map. It’s unlikely that the map will grab the steering wheel and drive you to your destination.
So why should it be enough to just stare at your vision board and hope for the best? Wouldn’t it be a more powerful sign to the universe if you grabbed life by the balls?
What if you combined your relentless pursuit to become a ‘better you’ with actionable steps?
Here’s my proposal: Ditch the vision board and start setting weekly goals
Planning too far into the future is counterintuitive because it makes it almost impossible to take direct and actionable steps. And without direct steps, you become demotivated and your vision becomes cloudy. Without realising it, you lose interest in your goals and you're off pursuing another fad.
Take for example your dream car that you plan to buy on your 25th birthday, which sits in the tens of thousands. How do you plan for something subject to a change of circumstances? How do you know your priorities won't change or that your income stream will remain steady?
Setting weekly goals allows you to be ready for these changes, it prepares you to be adaptable should your goals change. It helps you stay on track to achieve the bigger goal, by working your way up from the smaller one.
As humans, we are subject to growth and as a result change. That means as we grow older and experience life more, our thoughts become more complex. We go from begging our mothers for an extra fifteen minutes on the swings to taking out mortgages and buying homes. We often hear people say stuff like, ‘I’m not who I was 10 years ago.’ I’m sure you know one or two people in your personal life who have completely changed in character and attitude. These people no longer hold on to past beliefs or priorities. They’ve grown so much that their goals have grown with them.
Your vision board doesn't have enough space to accommodate all your changing thoughts, goals, and attitudes. That’s why sometimes it’s just better to ditch it.
Expressing gratitude
Ever wondered why the nicest people always seem to be the most fortunate?
It because they are grateful.
Expressing gratitude should be a daily requirement for those who want to go further in life. Take a second to appreciate all that you already have. Like a Job that covers the bills, food on the table, and warm shelter. Can you imagine just how difficult your life would’ve been if you did not have those- you wouldn't be reading an article on Medium on how to make the Law of attraction work for you. You’d be thinking about where your next meal would come from.
Grateful people give back and they acknowledge the privileges that they have. They aren’t afraid to admit luck was on their side. And humility is one of their core strengths. That’s why good fortune follows them wherever they go. This is how the Law of attraction functions, it rewards those who show gratitude with even more things that they can be grateful about. It’s a continuous cycle of giving and receiving.
Understanding that sometimes not having a rigid plan is better
I’m sure we all know at least one person who's jumped into a not so well thought out plan and instantly regretted it. These ‘not well thought out plans’ can sometimes involve debt and divorce.
It all sounds pretty inflated until you find yourself when you have room to maneuver. So what causes people to plan their life out so rigidly, and how do they cannot adhere to their standards, you may wonder?
One of the primary reasons people plan so rigidly is because of their desire to be in control of everything. The plan, the process, the energy, the time, and the result. Unfortunately for extreme planners, this is impossible to do. Life is one unpredictable sequence of events. Its untamable nature is exactly what makes it so exhilarating. Extreme planers are aware of this. And this is why they constantly end up feeling defeated because they know deep down that they are not in control of everything.
The truth is sometimes rigid plans can sidetrack you from becoming the person you meant to be. You can’t always plan for perfection, things are bound to happen that you won't be in control of. And that's beneficial because a big part of the learning processes that lead to growth rely on failure and a little improvisation.
Sometimes you need to get out of your own way, you can’t continue to go through the motions forever. There comes a point in your life when you need to start living freely and accept that everything happens for a reason.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't have a goal you're working toward. No. It means understanding that there is no guarantee, in life, that things will always go according to plan. So embrace the wilderness and let go of all expectations. Focus on yourself and if it is meant to be it will be.
To Summarise
- The law of attraction can only do so much for you. Take it one step further and set realistic targets to measure your progress.
- Always remain grateful for what you already have. Use it to help others and you will be on track to achieving greater feats in life.
- Refrain from planning your life out so rigidly. Accepts life’s unpredictable nature and enjoy the ride.
And remember: The best memories are almost always unplanned.
