How to make 5 figures writing on Medium

And why I nearly quit.

How did I get started?

I was 20 years old, still had a long time until I graduated from med school, so I thought I should make some extra money so I won’t have to ask my parents every time I go out. I wanted to be independent.

After many try-and-fails, I stumbled upon a video from Zulie Rane. She talked about how she makes 8k/month writing. And most of it came from Medium. So I thought: I’m not really good at writing, but let’s give it a go!

When I first started my writing journey on Medium everything was overwhelming. It took me forever to write an article, the titles were boring, the content was below average and I just COULDN’T GET MORE THAN 30 VIEWS PER ARTICLE.

And after 2 months I was ready to quit.

3 days later, I get a notification. One of my articles got 1500 views. In one day. And I made like 20$ that day only from that article. So I decided to try again.

BEST DECISION EVER!

In the following months, I started making more and more each month. Even though this is not a full-time job for me, far from it actually, I still enjoy writing an article every couple of days.

But enough about me. Let’s talk about how will you make money off Medium.

How do you get paid for writing on Medium?

You don’t get paid for your views!!!

Many people brag about their views, but it’s pointless. You can have 1 million views per article and get paid like 10$ if 99% of those are external.

What matters is the user’s reading time. That’s the time readers who have a current subscription spend reading your story. That’s what you get paid for.

So how can you increase the reading time?

  1. Catchy title! “You don’t judge a book by its cover” — think again
  2. Clever subtitle! You have to captivate the readers' attention
  3. Eye-catching cover image! An image speaks more than 1000 words.

Another way of making money on Medium is through referred members. You get 2.25$ for each new member you get to join the platform. And you get that EVERY MONTH, for as long as their subscription is active. Even only 10 members would be an extra nearly 25 bucks per month with no effort.

If you still don’t manage to get that reading time up, TRY TRY AND TRY AGAIN!

Definitely don’t give up! If I could do it, so can you!

How much can you actually make from writing?

You can make enough to retire…

But I’m not going to tell say that you are going to make that money because, in 99.9% of the cases, that’s not true. And you shouldn’t fall for those clickbait titles “300k per year writing on Medium”. Maybe it’s possible, but it’s not for everyone.

In the past 11 months, I made roughly 800$ per month, through referred members and paid reading time on my articles.

9123 $ so far.

And this month seems like I’ll make a bit more, adding up to roughly 10k in one year. And I’m very proud of it.

If you are consistent and produce quality articles, you can definitely reach these numbers as well. Remember, perseverance is the key factor! If you want something bad enough, you should never give up.

The other key factor to your success will be to follow me on Medium since it’s the best way to keep up with my articles every day! Also, it’s free and will help me out very much!

If you are new to the platform, creating an account will give you unlimited access to all the stories on this wonderful platform, and I guarantee those will be the best 5$ you’ve spent recently. Even only by applying my tactics you can make more than that each month and be profitable!
