How To Make $5.19 A Month On Medium

I’ve read countless articles on Medium about “How To” make hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on this platform each month. I appreciate and enjoy all of them.

What seems to be lacking however is the more realistic, less extravagant, and infinitely more attainable, “How to earn $1 to $5 a month on Medium” articles. Fear not my probably average, mostly overlooked, fellow coffee money writers, I’ve got you. Your worries are over and I will reveal all of my secrets.

If it sounds like I’m taking a shot at those making a killing each month writing on the same platform as the rest of us, I’m not. I believe everyone has the right to make as much money as possible and good for those who do, cheers to all of you.

What I am doing is simply trying to level the playing field. We keep reading about how to make it rain…like pour, here on Medium each day. I’m a reader as well as a writer and I look for those green colored-nuggets of financial wisdom all the time. Sometimes though, I want to read about my side of the writing tracks.

Now that you know why I’m writing this piece, let’s get into how I pocket my monthly greenbacks.

Stay Distracted

It’s easy to write when conditions are perfect. A Comfortable chair, great lighting, essential oils, and a quiet atmosphere. Can’t you just smell the money?

Now, do as I do and that $5 month will be chugging like a freight train destined directly for your bank account in seconds flat. Here’s what I do:

Sit on a kitchen stool with no back. What this does is it forces you to write quickly and barely edit because the pain of sitting in that position sucks and all you want to do is finish your piece and submit.

As far as lighting is concerned, make sure you’re sitting near a window on a sunny day or learn how to remember to pick up lightbulbs on your weekly trips to the supermarket. Essential oils?? I’m not sure what a quiet atmosphere is but I try and write when my kids are in-between zoom and google classrooms, while I’m making them lunch and yelling:

“No way young lady, you’d better finish that math assignment”.

Ignore Advice

You’ve read all the great “How To” articles about making some serious scratch on Medium and you may have even taken notes while doing so.

Well, stop doing that.

It’s time-consuming, you’ll get lost in the endless flow of said articles and you’ll give up. Nothing will get done. It’s better to write something instead of nothing so just have at it and move on.

Write About Obscure Topics

Tech, politics, love, sex, relationships, and mental health are beaten to death here on Medium. Do people love reading about them? Damn straight they do! Will other writers and readers follow you and help you get noticed and read often if you write about them? Bet on it!

That being said…..booooooring.

Instead of what’s expected (or profitable) give some dark, depressing poetry a shot. Write about music only you like. Give controversial opinions and make no apologies. Get under the skin of as many people as possible. Follow these rules and BOOM, $5 next month!

Look, we’re all here because we love writing, reading, or both. Maybe some of you even liked this light-hearted (yet half-joking) piece. There truly are some amazing writers and authors here. I’m inspired by so many of you and I do appreciate and understand the guts it takes to be vulnerable. We do put ourselves out there and then must live with whatever comes our way after we hit “send”, and for that, we should all be proud!
