How to Make $1,000 a Month Reselling Sneakers.
Want to make some extra cash on the side? The sneaker culture is bigger than ever in 2020, with some sneakers reselling for over $30,000 as of late. I wish I could tell you sneaker reselling is as simple as buying a shoe and then flipping it for a profit. The hard part is obtaining the shoes. Before I get to deep into the process of product research, obtaining the shoes, and how to flip them, let me make some things clear. First, not all shoes resell. The vast majority of them do not. Second, obtaining the shoes is no easy feat, but there are things YOU can do to change that. Before we continue, let me discuss some of the simple vocabulary you should know before entering the sneaker reselling market.
- “DS” otherwise know as deadstock, essentially deadstock refers to a shoe that has never been worn and is brand new.
- “VNDS” or Very near deadstock refers to a shoe that maybe has been worn once but more importantly has no signs of wear and is in brand new condition.
- “Grails” are the most desired sneakers in one’s own opinion. Usually seemingly unattainable.
- “GR” stands for general release, hinting that the shoe will be a mass-production release, however, don’t let this scare you away from profits.
- “Bricks” are shoes that will not sell out, and that will not resell.
The resell market’s vocabulary is dense and constantly evolving, these are some of the terms that are most commonly used and important. Now, let’s get into the money and how to make it.
Here are the three simple steps:
Step 1: Product Research
Every shoe will not resell, I believe that goes without saying, however, the process of finding the shoes that will is incredibly easy. There are hundreds of accounts on Instagram and Twitter related to sneaker reselling. This is your go-to resource as it will tell you all you need to know such as sell-out times, resell prices (estimates), and demand. A few accounts that I recommend following to stay up to date include (on Instagram) @hypebeastdrops, @sneakeratom, and @sneakernews. The comments on all these pages are another vast resource as consumers will always leave their thoughts in the comments which is another gage as to how well the shoes will do in the resell market. Another great research method is going onto the StockX app and looking at the resell prices, and quantity of shoes sold prior to sneaker drops as this is another strong sign as to how well the sneakers are doing in the market. Also, as time goes on, you will begin to learn what shoes typically resell and which don’t.
Step 2: Obtaining the shoes
Shoes are released at typical retailers such as Footlocker, FootAction, Champs Sports, Nike, Yeezysupply, and so on so forth. This will be where you try to obtain the shoes. Now, this is by far the hardest part of the process as obtaining the shoes is no easy feat. Sneaker launches, especially, pertaining to very hyped sneakers are swamped with bots therefore, in reality obtaining a pair will be extremely difficult. However, it can be done. Now, if you are very serious about getting into the sneaker reselling market I would advise you to buy a bot in order to have the highest chances of succeeding. Bots are available in an abundance, do research, and find the best one for you as they all have different features. I would also recommend joining a sneaker reselling group on discord or Facebook as in most cases those groups get that latest details on all the drops and can further help make you successful. Moreover, sizes 6–9 are the most profitable. Larger sizes tend to be bricks, and therefore, the profit is not anywhere near what it would be on the smaller sizes.
Step 3: Reselling
This is the easiest part, once you have obtained the shoes; you have won. As I said previously, sizes 6–9 (MEN) are the most profitable and the sizes you should go for. Always buy in bulk if possible, the more pairs, the more profit. However, sneaker retailers will limit you to one pair, this presents an issue but there are ways around it. Also, there are various platforms where you can safely sell your shoes, however, these platforms and apps will take a percentage of the sale from you. The most popular apps are StockX, Grailed, and GOAT. However, if you want to maximize your profit I would recommend building a social media presence and Instagram page where you can privately sell. Using this method ensures the most profits. Lastly, holding onto the shoes tends to be the smartest decision when reselling. During the first few weeks after a drop, prices will be lower than normal as everyone has a pair they are trying to resell and make a profit on. Therefore, the market is lower and the prices aren’t as competitive. This is especially true with all Jordan 1 High Models. In my opinion, you should hold onto the shoes for a few months and you will see a slow rise in the price of the sneaker. A year down the line, the sneaker could be worth double, or triple what it was a year back so I emphasize patience when reselling sneakers. However, with that being said, continue to do your due diligence and make sure the shoes are not going to be restocked because that will destroy its value on the resell market. Once you’re ready to sell, you can simply make an account on the app of your preference (look at fees before deciding), and sell them and your payment will be paid out to your Paypal account. Depending on the number of shoes you obtain, and their resell value you can easily make over 1,000 dollars a month.
Conclusion
I wish everyone success in their sneaker reselling ventures. The game is easy once you get a hang of it, and you can make well over $1,000 a month by simply holding onto shoes and buying them. Reselling is competitive, and it will be frustrating at first but you must persevere and you will succeed. Also, sneaker resellers receive a lot of flack from the sneaker community as it prevents sneakerheads like myself from buying the shoes for our personal collections and makes our lives that much more difficult. Remember to do the research necessary and do not blindly buy shoes. This is a very easy way of making some extra cash on the side, and for some, you can sell enough pairs to make a substantial passive income.
