How to Live Your Best Life

In her book Ultimate Confidence, Marisa Peer has an exercise that involves closing your eyes and imagining what it would be like to live your best life.

She stresses to think beyond material objects. The positive impact of material things is not sustainable and begins to fade after a while. It just leaves you wanting more stuff.

Have you ever imagined how cool your life would be after you got a new car? When you first get the car you’re so proud of it. You wash it all the time and you won’t dare let anyone to eat in it. But after a while, the excitement wears off and you get used to it. You start cleaning it less often and you stop stressing about people eating inside it.

For me, my best life is about how I’m showing up in the world, how I am spending my time, my relationships with others, and doing meaningful work.

Showing up

When I am at my best I am confident and feel like I can do anything. You can see it in my posture and feel it in the energy I’m giving off. I know I am showing up how I want to when I catch myself smiling for no reason and walking with a swagger. It’s hard to describe but my girlfriend has commented on this walk on more than one occasion. It’s all about my internal validation. I feel good about myself, and that has a positive impact on others.

Time

It’s been said that when people are on their deathbed, time is the one thing they wish they had more of. Time to go after that dream, time to spend with the people they love.

When I am at my best, I don’t waste much time. I am intentional with my day and make time for the things that matter. I am focused on my vision and spend my time getting closer to realizing it.

Relationships

When I think about some of the happiest moments in my life it almost always involves time spent with other people. We are social animals who are not meant to spend life alone. That’s why it’s so important for us to find our tribe and spend time with them often. It makes life a lot more rich and interesting.

Meaningful work

I am at my best when I am having an impact. This is all about doing work that I find meaningful and fulfilling. When I think about my worst days, it’s when I am doing busy work. I try to limit busy work but it’s not always easy. My best days are when I get to spend hours on a project that adds value for other people. Isn’t that the point of work?

Conclusion

What I identified as a great life for me might be different for you. But hopefully this piece has given you something to think about. Take some time today to close your eyes and imagine what your best life looks like. Imagine what you would be doing, how you would feel, and who is with you. It may be the beginning of creating the life you want.
