How to Leverage LinkedIn to Grow Your Business
My top ten tips for success.
LinkedIn is a lot like Facebook for business professionals but in some ways it is a different ball game entirely. I have been using it for a while, and have learned quite a few tips and tricks to maximize my reach, and increase profile views.
The object of the LinkedIn game is to get potential customers/clients to view your profile, which is essentially your resume plus your recent activity. By looking at your recent activity they are able to see how you engage with others on the platform, and the type of content that you are posting and determine whether or not you are someone they might light to work with.
In this article I will share with you my top ten tips, plus an additional bonus piece of advice to help you make the most out of your time on LinkedIn and grow your business using the platform to find clients.
1. Most people are scrolling through their feed mindlessly to kill time. Your goal is to STOP the scroll. With that in mind, it is important for you to create a scroll-stopping headline.
2. Add a few emojis to capture their attention. Some people think that emojis are unprofessional, and that LinkedIn is not the place for them. I beg to differ. When you are in business for yourself as a coach, you are your brand and it will pay off in the long-run if you let your personality show through by using emojis.
3. Add more white space to lead people through your post like a story. Statistics show that 57% of LinkedIn users are on mobile devices, which is something to keep in mind when crafting your posts. Bullet points and single sentence paragraphs really help with readability.
4. To increase your reach you really should use hashtags. I like to add mine at the end of my post so that they aren’t cluttering up the post, and I generally add between 3–5 of the most relevant tags, you are not limited to this number, that is my personal preference.
Another tip related to hashtags is to ask people to follow your signature hashtag; for example mine is #UnleashYourJoy
5. Always include a call to action at the end of your post. This could be directing them to visit a website, asking a question, or making a statement like “Add your thoughts below.” You could have the most amazing post in the world, but without a call to action, your readers won’t know what step to take next.
6. Drip-feed your responses to the comments on your posts — only reply to 3 or 4 people at a time. Every time you comment, it bumps your post back up in the feed, extending your reach by showing it to more people.
7. Never add links to the body of your post. LinkedIn will lower your reach unless you use the Post-Edit-Post method. What I mean by this is publish your post without the link, then click edit and add the link, re-publish the post. For some reason, if you use the PEP method, LinkedIn doesn’t recognize the post as having a link in it.
You can also add your link into the comments on the post, just be sure to tell your readers that you are adding a link in the comments so that they will look for it there.
8. Be authentic! As much as LinkedIn is a professional platform, it is also a place for you to express yourself, as yourself. You are your brand, show that off! Your vibe attracts your tribe.
9. Add between 20–30 targeted connections a day. You will target them by looking for posts that are similar to content that you post. Be sure to add a note to your connection request so they know why you are adding them. Doing this can also strike up a conversation with them. I like to end my notes in a question to encourage them to respond.
Note: Do not sound spammy! I literally can’t stress this enough. If you jump into their inbox, and the first interaction they receive from you is a business advertisement, you won’t look good at all and it is highly unlikely they will reply.
10. Show up EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Consistency is key. Post your own original content and add value to your audience daily. This will position you as an expert in your field, and people would much rather give their money to someone they are sure knows what they are doing than to someone who has no clue.
11. Engage with other people’s posts! I don’t mean just scroll through the feed and click like on posts. Add value through commenting. This will greatly increase your visibility, form stronger connections, and position you as someone who knows their stuff!
