How to Know the Exact Time A Publication Scheduled Your Story to Be Published?

A tool that helps us stay at ease without being hasty

Photo by Christopher Gower on Unsplash

This would be an extension of a truly productive story by Sara Barnes.

She provided a trick to know if a publication has scheduled your story to be published. Now, let me extend that trick to let you know the exact date and time your story is scheduled.

1. Go to your draft and add ?format=json at the end of the edit link and hit enter.

The link looks like — https://medium.com/p/***/edit

Please note this doesn’t work for draft link or friend link.

2. Find for scheduled in the meta page. No doubt, if you’re able to find it, your story is scheduled to be published. If not, perhaps your awesome story hasn’t been reviewed yet.

3. Now, copy the number after it.

For me, it’s 1621916100000

This tells my story is scheduled to publish after 1621916100000 milliseconds from Jan 1st, 1970.

Why Jan 1st, 1970?

Jan 1st, 1970 is called as the Epoch date and that’s when time started for Unix computers. It is marked as time ‘0’. Any time since that date is calculated based on the seconds elapsed.

To put it simpler, the timestamp of any date will be difference in seconds between the date and Jan 1st, 1970. It goes on incrementing by ‘1’ as each second passes.

Here in this metadata, we have it in milliseconds. I don’t know why.

Now that we got some number to move forward.

Here’s a code to know your awesome story’s scheduled time, and I call it the Revealer tool

Revealer Tool:

  • Click on the green ▶ symbol at the top of the embed.
  • Paste the number you obtained in step 3 in the console, and hit enter.
  • Now the code executes and calculates the exact date and time, and time left to get your story published.

Paste may not work on mobile, try if you could type it. I know it’s difficult, but that’s how it works ;)

>>>1621916100000 Your story is scheduled to be published on 2021–05–25 04:15:00 GMT. i.e., In 15 days 23 hours 15 minutes 1 seconds

Conclusion:

That’s it! Hope this helps you come out of that suspense. Do try this before you remove your draft from a big publication. Because you don’t wanna miss your chance having your awesome story in a big pub :)
