How to Know If You’re Becoming Your Future Self
A practical idea to getting yourself to the person you’ve envisioned becoming
Achieving success in life doesn’t take only dreams and goals. Certain variables come into play as well.
Some of them are planning, aligning yourself with the right people, and taking consistent action.
Then there’s the measurement of one’s results because without knowing how you’re faring, you won’t know if you’re becoming your vision or not.
So, in this piece, I’m going to help you with how to measure and find out if you’re becoming what you said you’d be.
Success in everything is in the consistency
Life is a process. The same is true for everything in it. Things don’t become what they’re supposed to become overnight. They go through a period. The same is with us as human beings and what we want.
Whatever vision and thing we aspire to become, we go through a process that entails action, persistence, and consistency.
If your vision is to become a published author, the process involved is to write every day. Not today and then some days. If yours’ is a musician, you have to write songs, practice singing, etc. Whatever everyone wants to become, there’s a routine to follow, and doing just that is the guaranteed way to become it.
So, to know whether you’re becoming your future self, it’s all about looking at what you do whenever the day is here. Whether you’re taking action or not. That’s the measurement.
“If you want to be successful, you need consistency and if you don’t have it, you’ve got no chance.” — Paul Merson
Your future self is all about goals
What you want to become tomorrow, which we term as your future self, is your dream. But what gets you there are goals.
So, the question is, do you have goals? You see, you can have a superb vision of yourself, imagine, visualize, etc., but if you don’t have your vision broken down into bits that you strive towards every day, you’ll never get anywhere.
Measuring yourself and knowing if you’re becoming the person you’ve envisioned is through goals and acting on them. Not once, not twice but every day until you become this person or thing.
“Dreams without goals, are just dreams and they ultimately fuel disappointment.” — Denzel Washington
Obstacles are signs
There’s a sentence I took from watching the movie, The Secret. “When you put a seed in the ground, all the pressure of the earth is on top of it.” When you start working on your dream, everything will go against you. Family, friends, the world, etc. And it’s all because you’ve chosen to be something different from the masses.
The message resonates here as well. Are you experiencing stress in your journey? Is there anything like resistance around you? If you are facing it, it’s a sign you’re doing something great and, for that matter, getting to your future self.
The reason? People who aren’t doing anything in life aren’t facing any pressure in their life. They’re comfortable without any pain. Only those who are seeking a goal face resistance and stress from life. So, if you’re experiencing something like this, don’t stop. Keep going. It’s a sign of you doing something.
“Most of us have two lives: the life we live, and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance.” — Steven Pressfield
Feeling good about yourself is also another sign
The mere fact that you have goals and do what it takes to achieve them brings happiness. But unfortunately, the opposite is true for those who aren’t acting on their goals.
The reason is that there’s a feedback mechanism to goals. When you set a goal and work on it, you have happiness and confidence in yourself. In this instance, the feedback is positive.
When you fail to act on your goals, the feedback becomes negative. You tend to lose the motivation to act. You see yourself as someone who can stick to their words. You’ll see yourself as a loser, triggering feelings like low self-esteem. It’s all because when you say something to yourself, you don’t do it. And these feelings, when not taken care of, can lead to depression.
But when you’re acting on the goals, you feel happy automatically because you know you’re becoming the person you’ve envisioned.
Some questions to help you know if you’re becoming your future self
- Am I doing the things I said I’ll do? This question deals with your goals. It’s a great way to measure yourself. It helps you know if you’re sticking to your words after you said them.
- How am I faring with my goals? In this context, you’re acting on your goals. But, how great are you working on them? It helps you measure yourself concerning your efforts toward your dreams. There’s nothing like half action for complete success. Success demands total activity, and taking 100% action is right. So, this question helps you know how you’re doing with acting on your goals.
- Am I facing challenges? I’ve talked earlier about how you’ll face resistance and difficulty if you’re acting on your goals. And the reason is that people who aren’t doing anything are comfortable. So this question makes you know whether you’re genuinely taking action or not because there’s nothing like resistance if you’re not doing anything.
- Am I happy with myself? This is psychologically automatic. If you’re doing the things you said you’d do, you’ll become pleased with yourself because of the idea that you’re becoming what you’ve envisioned yourself becoming. It’s the same with not acting on your goals. You’ll feel bad. You’ll see yourself as a loser and someone who can’t simply keep their words to themselves.
Final thoughts
Success is predictable. The same is failure. If you dream and set goals to work on it and do exactly that every day, you’ll know you’re becoming successful.
Failure is the same. If you don’t work on your goals, nobody has to tell you that you’re failing. You’ll know it.
Because if I say I’ll do A, B, and C today, which I know is the right way to achieve my dream, and I do it, I don’t need anyone to tell me I’m becoming successful. I’ll know it likewise if I’m not doing anything.
Getting to know if you’ll succeed in life or not is all about what you do with your time every day.
That’s how to measure yourself and know if you’re becoming your future self.
