Creating interest and action in your writing

Creating interest and action in your writing is quickly done using action verbs to keep the story moving. It makes the reader and prospective reader want to go on to the next paragraph or chapter. They are curious about what will happen next in your story.

Action verbs are time telling verbs. They can show past, present, or future tense. Action verbs are when somebody does something and can be seen or not seen. Unseen example: Jane thought about pets. She wanted a puppy. Seen example: Andy picked up his pencil. My mom tapped her foot to the music.

Past tense example: Yesterday, Mike ran around the block.

Present tense example: My dog runs faster than yours.

Future tense example: Tomorrow, they will run the marathon.

When you are writing, think about when more movement in your story line would help keep the interest fresh. As you re-read your writing, see where the story line starts to move slowly or work at following the content. Choose different verbs and see if that will change your ability to remain interested in the content.

Not all action verbs are created equal. Study the category of action verbs and select those of higher value for your story to get the most from your content. Keep your reader interested in the movement of your story line. You will experience more fun when you know how to keep your stories fresh and keep your reader interested in your work.
