How to Have a Healthy Mindset

A healthy mindset is the foundation of self improvement. In order to make good decisions and take care of others, you have to have a healthy mindset. In todays chaotic and fast-paced world, it can often be challenging to balance your mind.

That’s why this is also the time when we need to the most. It’s the people who don’t think they have time to take a 10 minute walk to clear their head that need to the most.

Take Time to Clear your Mind

The first step towards a healthy mindset starts with taking time every day to clear your mind. This is a kind of meditation I learned from Naval Ravikant, where you sit quietly without any noise and just process your thoughts. this is different from traditional mindfulness where you try to empty your mind. In a “clearing mediation”, the goal is just to let your thoughts flow freely and release them.

This helps to purge a restless mind and helps to become more focused, calmer, and clear thinking. This is a vital first step in developing a healthy mindset.

If you don’t make time to clear your mind every day, you will feel angst, stress, anxiety, and cannot focus. For a mind to be healthy, it needs to be free of anxiety and worry.

Affirm Positive Thoughts

This may be the most important way to create a healthy mindset. Our thoughts create our reality. If you focus on what’s wrong, you’ll attract more suffering. If you focus on gratitude and motivation, you’ll be happy and unstoppable.

Intentionally focusing on positive thoughts helps to create a healthy mindset because you are only letting in thoughts that serve you and not the negative thoughts that don’t.

There are various ways to do this. One of the most powerful is affirmations. You can repeat them out loud or to yourself. It also helps to listen to affirmations or guided meditations. What you focus on really does create your reality. Thoughts create beliefs that create actions that create change.

Anything that I’ve accomplished didn’t happen by accident. It happened because I made a goal, believed It could be accomplished, and persisted. This only happens through positive thinking.

I made a conscious decision throughout the day to think positively and optimistically. For one thing, life is just better when doing this. I’m also more motivated to work on projects and be more productive.

It’s important to realize that our mind was not designed to make us happy. It was designed to keep us alive. It’s natural to focus on the negative because from a survival perspective, it’s more advantageous. Your mind wants you to think about danger and consequences because that is most likely to keep you alive rather than focusing on how grateful you are to be alive. Your mind naturally wants to look out for that saber tooth tiger instead of appreciating the morning sunrise.

But today we have the luxury of not having to think about staying alive every second of the day. We actually get to live and enjoy it. That’s an opportunity so few humans in history have had. We should recognize how great it is to be alive in this time and take advantage of it every day.

Surround yourself with encouraging people

It’s the people we surround ourselves with that can have the most profound impacts on our mindset. Negative people will only bring you down while those with a positive impact will help bring you up. You don’t need to feel obligated to spend time around people that suck energy from you or put you down. Instead, make sure your inner circle is comprised of people who support and encourage you.

If you don’t have family or friends to support you, it’s never been easier to find people that do. Everyone in the world is now just a phone call or facetime away. Meetup.com can introduce you to others in your area with similar interests. A local church will have people ready to support and encourage you.

But I have trust issues

I feel this is a good spot to talk about the elephant in the room. You may be thinking “ I can’t depend on people because so many people have let me down or betrayed me”. Every one of us has been betrayed by someone in our lives and likely have been the betrayer to others. We are all people and sometimes people just suck.

We’re all imperfect. People have let you down in the past and rest assured they will let you down in the future. That is no reason to close yourself off or think you can’t trust people anymore.

I see so many people with trust issues who talk about not wanting to get hurt in the future. Getting hurt is part of life. It’s normal and it’s ok. If you stay closed off because of fear of trusting others, you will lose out on so many more fulfilling relationships. Part of having a good life and healthy mindset is people who love each other. Naturally, there’s going to be hurt that comes with that. Learn to accept it when things go bad with people but be open to new relationships and new possibilities.

Not trusting people out of fear is kind of like not going outside again to see a sunset because you’re afraid of hurricanes. I live in Florida. Hurricane season comes every year. It’s terrible weather a few days each year, but we know it’s going to happen, we prepare for it, and we continue to live our lives. I go outside every day to appreciate the nice days while accepting that a few will be bad.

Eat a healthy diet

To have a healthy mindset you need a healthy body. To have a healthy body, you need a healthy mindset. Health in the absence of either isn’t health at all.

In order to keep your mindset and body healthy, it’s important to eat real whole foods, unprocessed, and natural. It’s best to avoid sugar and complex carbs.

If you’re not sure what real food is, look at the ingredients. Real food often has little or no ingredients. For example, an apple, broccoli, and ground beef are all single-ingredient foods. However, if you look at the ingredients on a box of pop tarts, there are dozens of ingredients and none of them are actual foods.

When you’re giving your body whole foods with nutrition, vitamins, and minerals it runs optimally. You will be firing on all cylinders like a well-oiled machine.

If you live on processed food and sugar your body is malnourished. Your hormones are negatively affected and most definitely your mindset will not be at its best. It’s easier to have a healthy mindset when you feel good and strong.

Move your body every day

One key to a healthy mindset is movement. We were made to move and be physical. The type of movement doesn’t particularly matter. It could be exercise, dancing, a sport you enjoy, or walking in nature. When we move, our body releases endorphins which help to reduce pain and make us feel good. Movement makes you feel hopeful, positive, and motivated.

Do things you enjoy

It’s important to make time for yourself to do something that makes you happy. It could be watching tv, reading, playing video games. It doesn’t matter. Just take time to do something for yourself. It’s all about balance. Too much time doing this is unproductive and wasteful. But if you never take time to enjoy for yourself you will be chronically stressed and joyless. You owe it to your family to take time to do things you enjoy so that you can be the best you can be for them.

Get Grateful

A gratitude practice is one of the best ways to have a healthy mindset. It’s the quickest way to change your mood to positive. Get grateful for the things in life that we take for granted. A few examples are your home, a bed to sleep in, the ability to walk, a functional body and mind, your family, etc.

You can write them out or think to yourself. There are thousands of ways to do a gratitude practice. You just need to find the way that works best for you. This is the easiest way to shift into a healthy mindset quickly.

Final thoughts

If you are thinking positive thoughts, have supportive people in your life, eat healthily and move regularly, and practice gratitude each day, your mindset will be healthy. You will feel good in every way. You will make better decisions. You will have better relationships. You will pursue things that are more fulfilling to you and increase your quality of life.

Bad things will still happen and you won’t always be 100%, But you will be the best version of yourself while continuing to improve, which is the entire goal of self-improvement.
