How to Get off to a Fast Start on Medium…

Your first month on Medium may be a whole lot more important than you realize. Here is how you can hit the ground running and launch yourself toward future success on Medium…

A lot of people shoot for 100 followers their first month on Medium. I am not here to humble you and tell you that it isn’t possible; I’m here to inform you of quite the opposite actually.

Quantity & Quality Balance

Quantity should be your focus as a new Medium creator. Here is why;

• You need to get comfortable with coming up with many content ideas, titles, subtitles, etc.
• You need a solid number of articles for real discoverability on Medium, not a couple 12min reads.

Taking a quantity based approach can just mean shorter articles, not less effort.

Discoverability & Opportunity

Once you have published a decent quantity of work on Medium, your ready to learn more about discoverability on Medium, and the opportunities you have as a small author on the platform. It’s important to:

• Use 5 highly relevant tags on all articles you wish to be pushed.
• Use a terrific header that makes the reader wonder more, resulting in them clicking. See Choose Your Medium Title Carefully by Addison S
• Interact with other authors on the platform in an effort to spread your name and to help others genuinely.
• I believe at this stage, maybe a week or two in, you can hit a few hundred followers using interaction, good titles, and tags. Don’t aim for a hundred your first month; Maybe aim for 250+!

Publications vs. Self Published

Publications were just beginning their decline when I joined Medium. No disrespect to publications, I’m active in 3. They do work and I do recommend occasionally posting in them. That being said; In 2023, publications are no longer a must.

They just no longer have the same reach they did a few years ago, and I’ve seen a massive influx in self-published articles getting pushed by Medium.

The Dreaded Medium Partner Program.

Your not going to make jack all. Seriously, I recommend looking anywhere else to monetize, whether that be affiliate marketing, Ko-fi like I have chosen to try, or something else entirely. You will seriously make no money with the partner program until you’ve essentially already “made it” on the platform.
