How To Harness The Power of Life’s Momentum
Become unstoppable once your momentum has kicked in
Newtons First Law: An object remains in the same state of motion unless a resultant force acts on it.
If you continue to live a mundane life, nothing will change.
Building momentum, in the beginning, is difficult it can be one of the hardest things you’ll do. But once that momentum kicks in, the only way is up. It’ll be harder to fall back to your old lifestyle.
Remember, as a kid playing on the merry-go-round. A bunch of your friends would be on the ride, weighing it down, and unfortunately for me, I was always the one to push everyone to get the momentum going. The first step was always the hardest — trying to move from a stationary position. A few steps in it got easier and eventually, I would reach a point where I could hop on the merry-go-round, and without having to push, it would continue to move.
“Once you gain momentum, you will be hard to stop-virtually unbeatable-even though you’re now putting out considerably less effort while receiving greater results.” — Darren Hardy
Now, how do I get off the ground?
Like I said, getting off the ground and moving from a stationary position to a continuous motion of the merry-go-round is the harder part. There are many methods you can use to ignite the initial fire.
- Identify the friction
If you start to push the merry-go-round and there is a rock in your way which keeps slowing you down, you’d move the rock. When starting up a new venture or habit, there is always that ‘rock’ giving you resistance between getting off the ground and having momentum.
Identify that pull-back, whether it’s your phone or bad eating habits, and remove the friction.
2. Build routines
Routines are the shoes with good traction that give you the grip to run and push the merry-go-round. Having a routine will reduce the activation energy it takes to reach the peak momentum. The greater the challenge, the more rigorous the routine needs to be.
Momentum works on both sides of the equation
Momentum can work for or against you. If you fall into the trap of not pushing the merry-go-round, it’ll be harder for you to come back the next day. Momentum can be dangerous when it works against you and makes bad habits in your life seem simple.
You need to want to push the merry-go-round enough to block out the thoughts of not coming back. Reflect on the deeper reasons you want to build this momentum and the benefits it can have on your overall life in the long run.
Takeaway
Remember Newton’s first law. Be the accelerating force that is needed to move an object in a particular direction. As the force of that acceleration increases, the object becomes nearly impossible to stop.
Your life is the object, and your routines determine the level of force.
Have a great week!
