Abstract

hen you tweet or reply to a tweet. People will scroll through your profile. They will check your photo, your pinned tweet, your bio and your banner. And as with any interaction, a sale starts. How to grow a twitter account in 2023?

Last year, I started posting on twitter again. Since August I have gained about 2000 followers for a total of a little more than 6000 followers and I helped several people to grow their account in the same time.

I don’t have a big following. Some of my friends on twitter, who I started with two years ago, have now more than 50k followers. And by observing them, I was able to identify some patterns on how they did to grow their audience.

This article will be divided into several parts. The first one is for those who are starting from scratch.

Why create an audience on twitter?

Several of my friends have developed a whole business on twitter. They sell books, coaching, training … They escaped from their daily work and now use twitter as a complete business tool. If you already work on the internet, using twitter can be a good complement. If you have skills that are in demand, twitter can also be a good way to find clients.

Do I need to have a lot of followers to make money on twitter?

This is one of the myths. I know of other small accounts that have managed to create revenue streams even with less than 1000 followers. Twitter is a kind of giant network and you can send private messages to almost everyone. If you have a portfolio + positive reviews, you can use twitter just to get new clients and use your profile as a showcase.

How long does it take?

It will depend on your talent. I’ve seen people reach crazy numbers in one/two years. More than 100k followers even if it is usually the exception. On the other hand, with a worked profile, by devoting a little time each day and by using the good levers, between 5 and 10k followers is largely achievable.

Can I start without knowing anyone?

Yes. There is no easier way than twitter to make friends. When I started, I didn’t know anyone. Today, my network consists of more than 200 accounts that have between 100 followers … and 100 k+ followers … When I need a retweet, I can just send a small DM and they accept to advertise me. Twitter is a fantastic way to improve your reach beyond your own following.

Where to start?

The profile. Before you start tweeting, you need an effective profile. When you tweet or reply to a tweet. People will scroll through your profile. They will check your photo, your pinned tweet, your bio and your banner. And as with any interaction, a sale starts. The equation will be “How many people can I convince with my profile.” Your profile is your storefront and you have to take care of all 4 elements. If you are not a graphic designer, you can use canvas to easily create a profile picture or a banner. For the pinned tweet, you can tell how you can help people on twitter. For the bio, ditto. Short bios tend to be more effective.

Once the profile is optimized, what do we do?

The replies

If you start from scratch. You will have to bring views on your profile. If you have no followers, your tweets will be ineffective. You have to go fishing for followers by replying to others’ tweets.

This brings us to a second problem: who to follow?

You have to follow those who have your followers. If you sell copywriting services, you’ll want to follow people who talk about business. If you sell email marketing services, ditto. If you sell meditation tips, you’ll want to follow those who talk about mental health.

It’s very important to figure out who has your followers since commenting on accounts that don’t have your target followers won’t get you followers that will resonate with your tweets. You are looking for your tribe.

Once you have identified the accounts that are in your niche. You need to comment under their accounts, quickly. If you are really motivated, activate the bell to be notified as soon as a tweet is published. This way, you can be in the first responses and maximize your views.

Also, focus on accounts that already have a large audience. Commenting on an account that has ten times the audience of another account will get you ten times the views on your profile. Not all replies are created equal.

How many replies per day?

It all depends on how much time you want to spend on this task. Between 25 and 50 replies is a good start. I simply advise you to follow a schedule that you can devote daily.

One of the mistakes made is to make replies that don’t make sense. If your reply doesn’t add anything to the tweet, there is no point in making it.

The quote tweet, the secret weapon.

In addition to replies, there is a secret weapon on twitter to get a lot of views on your profile. It’s the quote tweet.

Creators want views on their content. And sometimes, they need to bring their own content back to their timeline to maximize their engagement.

By doing a quote tweet, you give them the opportunity to do so. You can identify accounts that quote tweet consistently by browsing their timeline. Make a small list and every day, make good quote tweets. You’ll get extra views and follows.

And my content?!

Before 100 followers, it is almost useless to create content. You can be satisfied with three tweets per day. But almost nobody will read your tweets before the first 100 followers. You really need to focus on engaging with other accounts to get known. Once you have 100 followers, you can start creating your own content and grow with it.

How long does it take to start from scratch?

From my observations, a healthy growth is Month 1: 100–300 followers Month 2 : 500–1000 followers Month 3 : 1000–2000 followers Month 6 : 3000–5000 followers

These are averages. Some people explode these averages. Some are slower. For me, I was much slower. In my first year, I only made 4500 followers but I took a long break several times that killed my engagement.

Breaks on twitter will wipe out your account. You should not do them. Schedule your tweets.

To make your life easier. If you have money to spend, you can use a tweet scheduler like zlappo or hypefury. If you’re in the free market, you can use tweetdeck to organize your work.

Is it easy?

No, it is very hard. It takes time. It takes energy. But it can open the door to unique encounters and exponential growth of your network.

Plus, it will also improve your writing skills as you juggle your ideas into 280 characters.

The most important thing is consistency.

What killed my growth was the repeated breaks. Several months in the first year. 8 in the second.

Twitter rewards consistency. If you’re there every day. The algorithm will push your work. If you’re away for a long time.

The algorithm will forget about you and push you into the depths of twitter.

If I have one piece of advice to give, it’s this one. Be consistent and you will see results.

I wish you good luck. If you start a twitter account, feel free to comment with the link. I’ll take a look at your profile and maybe a little follow.

If you have any other question, don’t hesitate. One of my next articles will be dedicated to content. How to grow with threads once you’re over 1000 followers.
