How to Grow a Digital Business in 2022
Learn from my mistakes and what I wish I would have done sooner as a digital business owner.

Growing any business is very hard, as you know if you are reading this article today. The digital space for marketing is flooded with so many opinions and people trying to market their businesses, especially now. One of the biggest things I wish I would have done sooner is, niched down my services right away. For those that are new around here, my first small business is a design agency, Wood Media, that provides branding and web design services.
My top tips to start growing your digital business in 2022 that I wish I would have done a lot sooner…
#1. Niche down sooner.
Most entrepreneurs start out saying they want to sell to everyone, but that doesn’t sell easily. Pick a niche and stick to it. A few examples of niching down are:
- Creating a digital template shop for helpful worksheets and resources for Kindergarten teachers.
- Creating a web design agency that creates websites only for Dietitians.
By niching down you’re able to research your target audience a lot more in-depth. You’re able to learn what they are struggling with, what resources they need, and the budget they are willing to spend on your tools (and more…).
#2. Participate in Networking Events.
This is another one I wish I would have done sooner. By going to conventions, joining local networking groups, and putting yourself out there you are able to help people “connect a name with a face” so they can truly get to know you.
I have met some of my closest entrepreneurial friends at networking events. Entrepreneurship can be a lonely journey at first so I highly recommend finding local events or groups to join to surround yourself with like-minded individuals.
#3. Get more involved with the community.
You can do this in a variety of ways, but supporting your local community is amazing. Here in the driftless area, (I live in a small rural town along the Mississippi River in Iowa, referred to as the driftless area) community is everything. Although this little town is very rural the events and community support are amazing!
A few ways you can get involved:
- volunteering in the community
- sponsoring events
- donating your money or time
- fundraising for a scholarship for the local high school
#4. Take notes on what works well and make adjustments as you go.
Get in the habit of journaling every day. I always journal in the morning, but then at the end of the day, I make notes as well so all of my thoughts are fresh. This way you can look back at patterns of what’s been working well and what needs improvement (in both business and personal life).
#5. Remain loyal to your customers and seek out additional opportunities.
As a business owner, it’s crucial to continue to nurture your clients, even after the project is completed. An easy way to do this is to ask them if they’d like to join your email list so they’re aware of new promotions, services, and stay up to date with your business. Finding a balance between finding new clients and nurturing previous clients so you become the “go-to person” for them is a balance that’s important to figure out.
#6. Truly get to know your customers.
As soon as you start to truly get to know your customers and what they need to succeed is the moment you’ll be able to create more valuable content for them. Personalizing your products and services for them along with inviting customers to give you feedback is a great way to know what’s running through their minds and what would make it even more valuable for them.
