Summary

The article outlines a process for transitioning from "trying" to "doing" by understanding and working with the conscious and unconscious mind to effectuate change.

Abstract

The article "How to go From ‘Trying’ to ‘Doing’" discusses the mental and emotional challenges associated with making significant life changes. It emphasizes that the act of "trying" can be draining, particularly when it comes to habits like smoking or overeating, or making major decisions like leaving a relationship. The author acknowledges that while the conscious mind is aware of the desired change, the unconscious mind resists altering familiar patterns, creating a conflict that can lead to frustration and indecision. The article suggests that this internal struggle is akin to a "main war" between the conscious and unconscious mind, with the "bouncer" or critical factor being the barrier that prevents change. To overcome this, the author proposes action steps such as recognizing the resistance, writing down goals, taking determined action, using positive language, and considering hypnotherapy to retrain the unconscious mind for accepting change. The article concludes by highlighting the effectiveness of hypnotherapy in facilitating the transition from prolonged attempts at change to actually achieving it.

How to go From ‘Trying’ to ‘Doing’

Trying, is just so exhausting. Trying to lose weight, stop smoking, leave a relationship. Trying to Doing, means getting past the bouncer

Trying to make a real change in your life can, of course, be challenging.

You know, deep down, this is the right decision.

You think about it, a lot. You dream about it, a lot. You talk about it, a lot.

This can go on for weeks, months or even years.

You become so frustrated with indecision. Your brain feels scrambled and you think you might be going a bit crazy.

You are exhausted.

You feel frozen when it comes to taking the next step.

You really want to change so why isn’t it happening.

Patterns of behaviour, which are repeated over and over, become embedded in the unconscious mind.

The unconscious mind likes what is familiar. It will repeat what is familiar.

Whereas the conscious mind knows what you want to change. It can even plan what needs to happen to make that change but implementing the change is the tricky bit.

Between the conscious mind and the unconscious mind lies a barrier (known as the critical factor). It’s like a bouncer at the door of the nightclub, allowing some to enter and others not.

The Main War

So the ‘bouncer’ is preventing the behaviour change because the unconscious mind wants to stick with the familiar pattern. It’s easy.

But in your conscious mind there is much frustration and confusion.

When you know this, it makes the next step so much easier.

The Action Steps that will take you from Trying to Doing

  1. Be aware of the ‘bouncer’
  2. Write down what you want. Seeing it in print allows you to tick off each step
  3. Make a determined start to action the first step
  4. Your unconscious mind relates to positive instruction not negative. Say ‘I am’……..healthy, (or whatever change you want). The unconscious mind will not respond to the negative, ‘I do not want……..and ‘trying’ is a negative
  5. And finally, Hypnotherapy can easily and effortlessly train your unconscious mind to accept the ‘suggestions’ of the change you want.

As a Hypnotherapist I love nothing better than to see a person go from months or years of ‘trying’ to easily and effortlessly DOING.

Warning: Hypnosis causes very deep relaxation.
