How To Get Your Lazy Ass Out of Bed

Okay, I admit a small part of me hates “life hack” stories. I don’t care how you go about your morning.

You do you, I’ll do me buddy.

But if you’re like me, you wish you hit the snooze button less — you wish you could get up the first time. Well, I’ve found a real, actionable, way to do that:

Sit up when your alarm goes off.

Seriously. Sit up, hang your feet off the side of your bed, and sit there.

You are infinity more likely to actually get up.

What Usually Happens When We Hear The Alarm

“Turn that shit off.” That’s basically my first thought when my iPhone starts blaring Apex around 7am.

I reach over, turn it off, then passively tell myself “I should totally be getting up right now…” And as I lay under the warmth of the covers, as my head rests on my oh-so seductive pillow, I conclude 5 more minutes can’t possibly hurt.

I do this all the time.

I fall back asleep; I fail to get up when I originally intended to do so.

“Just sit up you bum!”

You must be thinking “Sit up? Real good advice genius.”

That’s like saying the trick to brushing your teeth every day is to make sure you brush your teeth every day.

Hear me out.

Sitting up is much easier than getting up. It’s only half the work—half! As you sit on the edge of your bed, you trick your mind and body into feeling awake. You’ll see your feet, look around the room, and (hopefully) rise up and start your day.

But when you lay there?

Oh boy, good luck.

Try It For Yourself

Give it a shot. First thing in the morning tell yourself “sit up.” Don’t even debate if you’re ready! Just sit up then make your decision if you want to get up or go back to sleep…

And if you can’t muster up the willpower to sit up?

Maybe you should stay in bed. 🤷‍♂️
