What you need to know before writing on MEDIUM?

Writing articles on any platform can be easy for some or can be complicated for others.

Try and read this article till the end to get some tips on how to be a good writer.

To be honest, I don’t have any background in writing articles, I got this idea about writing after I saw a Youtube video about making money from writing.

The first thought that came in my mind was that I should give it a try, I am not going to lose anything, instead, I will get to learn something and maybe 1% I might succeed in this.

So the first thing I did was, I started searching about medium and its partner program, looking for publication and started brainstorming about what I can write.

I looked at my background, what I know, what kind of knowledge and interest I have, and figured out that being an Engineer, I know a lot about technology which is also my area of interest and I have been traveling a lot as well, why not write about tech and travel.

I was actually expecting a lot from my first article which I shouldn’t have expected, I was certainly looking at making money and writing articles every other day and posting them, just got around 10–15 views and 3 reads in my first week of writing, which I believed was not impressive at all. Then, I became a member with Medium, starting reading articles about writing, figuring out what I can do to improve my skill and the result was my mindset about writing articles and me expecting too much.

This is what I started believing in after failing in what I was actually doing.

Here are few tips for new writers

1. Don’t just write for money, if your articles are really good and impressive, they will definitely make you some money at the end.
2. Grow your network and make friends.
3. Write about what you know or have experienced in life or you can write some fictional stuff as well and don’t just try to copy someone or from somewhere.
4. Post 1 article each week or at max 2, don’t try to be on top from day one as it is a process and if you want to achieve something, you need to follow some steps.
5. Don’t write clickbait titles, which can draw in some readers but might make them skip reading the whole article. Instead, write attractive headlines so people read all of your words!
6. Make notes on what you are about to write, take your time, and prepare something good.
7. Try to be interesting, add some pictures but only if you clicked them or from wherever you can get pictures that don’t have copyrights on them.
8. Don’t write articles that are big and boring but there is also no perfect length for your article.
9. Use writing tools, ask for help from fellow writers.

If you start following just a few of these steps, you will definitely start getting some results. If you are writing some stories do not forget to give some examples and use pictures which makes your stories look more interesting.

Reading other writers' articles can also give you some ideas for your own articles and can help to know about how you should write your articles.

While writing articles is not the only to grow your audience on medium, I personally prefer reading and commenting on articles that make you much more visible to other people.

I personally believe that if you are not writing for a publication, then there are just 3 main steps to get more reads and followers

1. Follow people, especially those who you find are writing interesting articles and people you admire.
2. Following more people will get you more views and more readers.
3. In the end you will get more subscribers for your profile or your publication if you have one.

If you don’t know what to write or how to write, don’t put yourself under pressure. Just take your time, think about what you want to write, and start working on it slowly and gradually.
