A few years ago, I had everything I always wanted but felt more lost and unfulfilled than ever. I was so unhappy.
I had 2 choices: hope things would get better or create the change myself. I chose option 2.
I started dipping my toes into all things personal growth, self-care, reading, and (solo) travelling.
At first, I felt lost and overwhelmed, but bit by bit, I started to try new things and making time for (trying) new hobbies.
Since I got serious about incorporating and prioritizing self-care, it hasn’t been the same. My life has improved so much.
What is Self-Care?
Self-care is the act of looking after yourself through various methods. It could be getting enough sleep, making healthy choices and allowing time for self-love.
Self-care is also the process of taking care of your emotional, physical, and spiritual needs, resulting in increasing your happiness and resilience.
Why Should You Care about Self-Care?
Self-care is important for many reasons.
In the short term, self-care can help you be more productive and happier in your daily life. In the long-term, self-care can help deal with your anxiety, maintaining good health and keeping a positive outlook on life.
It can be hard to take care of ourselves. It takes time, energy and dedicated time. With that said, it doesn’t have to be daunting or complicated.
To incorporate self-care into your life, it might be necessary for you to change some things up a little bit.
A healthy self-love means we have no compulsion to justify to ourselves or others why we take vacations, why we sleep late, why we buy new shoes, why we spoil ourselves from time to time. We feel comfortable doing things which add quality and beauty to life. -Andrew Matthews
Benefits of Self-Care
By incorporating daily self-care into your life, you can generate long-term benefits for yourself.
Self-care is one way to take preventative measures to take care of yourself before you hit a low point.
Going through life without taking care of yourself can get exhausting. You are more likely to get sick or have some other negative outcome that you’ll want to avoid.
When feeling good becomes our natural state of being, stress becomes easier to manage.
You might also find that you’ll feel happier, that life has meaning, and everything is more enjoyable. These can be beneficial for all aspects of your life.

Tips for Getting Started with Self-Care
Self-care can be difficult to put in place when you think about all the things you have going on in your life.
With these tips, it will be much easier to get started with self-care, even with your busy lifestyle.
- Decide what you need to take better care of yourself. Do you need more sleep? Do you need to eat healthier? Or is it time for a spa day? Whatever it is that you’re currently not doing, start small and then work your way up.
- List the activities that are the most important to you. Put them in order of importance. This will help when you have limited time and need to choose what you’ll focus on to take care of yourself.
- Make room in your schedule. Can you wake up a little earlier or dedicate time when you normally watch some tv or scroll social media?
- Go to bed 15 mins earlier than usual. If you need more sleep or want to start waking up earlier, consider going to bed earlier. Another idea could be to limit your scrolling in bed, which can cut on valuable sleep time.
Self-Care Ideas
Self-care can be as short or as long as you need it to be, and you can spend your time relaxing, being active or learning something new. The important is that you get an opportunity to free your mind.
There are many options to choose from when it comes to choosing what to do daily.
- Waking up earlier than you do for some quiet time to yourself.
- Exercising can reduce stress, boost your mood, and increase your energy.
- Meditating. It could be as simple as taking 5 minutes to sit still, breathe and be.
- Reading for 10 minutes, a chapter, or 10 pages of your favourite type of book.
- Journaling what you’re grateful for, what’s been on your mind. You can also use journal prompts if you need inspiration.
- Resume or pick up a new hobby that you have always wanted to try.
- Relaxing. This could be allowing yourself to sleep in.
- Cooking or ordering your favourite meal.
- Listening to music. I like to put Youtube on the TV and having a concert of one of my favourite bands playing in the background while cooking or cleaning.
- Listening to a podcast — there are so many options available to you depending on your interests or what you want to learn.
- Gardening or doing yard work — I find both relaxing.
- Staying away from your phone. One of the most impactful ways to practice self-care is to disconnect from social media and the notifications from your phone.
- Pamper yourself — this could be giving yourself a warm bubble bath, a facial or booking yourself a spa day.
Remember that you don’t need to dedicate hours to all these. You schedule the time that makes sense for you now. The important key is to start small and be consistent.
You might also want to dedicate a day of the week where you focus on self-care, like a self-care Sunday, for example.
Why Tracking Your Progress Could Be Beneficial
It can be very helpful to track your progress when trying to achieve any goals in life.
By creating a self-care time log, you’ll be able to see which activities bring the best results for you and which ones are less effective.
You may find that some activities aren’t worth your time. It would then be beneficial to cut down on these activities and spend more time doing things that bring you joy.
How to Stay Motivated to Keep Up the Momentum
Know your Why. People motivated by the “why” of their actions will be more likely to stay motivated than those who are only motivated by the “what” of their actions.
Final Thoughts
Self-care is important for your physical and mental health. I hope you found the list of self-care ideas to help get you started practicing self-care in the ways that work best for you.
Don’t forget why this matters to YOU and keep it top of mind when trying new things — which ones make you happiest? Which ones will bring more joy into your life?
Remember that starting small and being consistent are key components to making any lasting change.
