How to Get Paid with the New Membership Referral Program
Did you know that Medium is paying writers to refer new members?

For those of you Medium writers who didn’t get the memo — or who simply haven’t found it buried in their email — Medium just rolled out a new compensation program!
I think you’re going to love it, and as far as I’m concerned, it’s long overdue. I’ve been waiting for something like this to come along, ever since I joined the Medium platform. So without further ado:

Introducing: Referred Memberships
Here’s how Medium described the new earning opportunity for those of us existing members:
“Here’s how it works: Every time you convert a reader to a paying member, you get half of that reader’s membership fee, net of standard payment processor fees, for as long as they are an active member. Referral earnings are additional to existing Partner Program earnings, which are based on member read time. Readers can sign up on your personalized referrals page.”
This was truly some exciting news to wake up to. Another cool thing is how when a non-paying reader subscribes and starts receiving your stories via email, they will have a chance to convert from a non-member, and become a Medium member.
When they do that, it will still end up counting towards your referral earnings, as long as they sign up for the Medium membership right then. Cool right?
If you think that’s cool, what do you think about the ability to track exactly how many referred memberships we snag?
All you do is click on: “Audience stats” when you go to your dashboard, on the top right hand side.
For those of you who want more details about the new Referred Memberships program, you can pop over to Medium’s blog post about it.
They even talk about how the earnings will be calculated. Basically, when someone becomes a member by using your referral link, you get a part of their membership fee every single month, for as long as they stay a member.
It’s easy to promote the program and solicit for members. All you have to do is simply post links, linking to YOUR REFERRAL PAGE that Medium creates for you. You can drop the link in your stories, as well as in your social media posts, or even your blog.
How to Get Your Membership Referral Link
So what do you think? Are you ready to get started on promoting your referral link. Well first you have to go copy it. You can do this by going to the settings tab that you find in the long drop down menu (just click the 3 dots).
On the settings page, scroll down to “Audience Development” and look to the right for the words: “Promote Memberships”. Clicking there will take you right to your referral link, where you can copy the link, plus view what your personal referral page looks like.
Here is my link to the referral page: (All I did was insert the link here and Medium automatically generated this convenient link card, just like they do for our stories. )
Here is a screen shot of what the page actually looks like to the reader:

More Referral Opportunities
Well, that’s it for the new Medium referral program, but there are lots of other programs that offer you referral income also.
