As a new writer on Medium, I confess I floundered around a bit. I met some great friends who helped me out.

I wanted to share some of these tips with you.

These handy tips may help you earn more money.

  • Write a short, interesting Bio. Don’t tell me you love to read. All writers read. Tell me about your pet Iguana or why you wear odd socks.
  • Write interesting titles and even more interesting articles.
  • Subtitles can add urgency. Use them.
  • Edit mercilessly.
  • Use proper title formats (Tt).
  • Don’t waste your reader's time with fluff. Get to the good stuff.
  • Put links at the end of your article, not the beginning. Too many links at the beginning will draw readers away from your work.
  • Write consistently on a topic to gain Top Writer status. Use the same tag on these articles.
  • For images, don’t pick the first one you come across on Unsplash. It’s boring and lots of other writers have used it. Dig deeper.

Here are some great tips that I use before I hit publish (or submit).

  • Did I tag my article using 5 relevant tags?
  • If I’m submitting to a publication, is one of the tags one of their required tags?
  • Is my title interesting, specific, and not clickbait?
  • Is my Medium referral link at the end of the article with a friendly invite to join?

After you publish, do these things.

  • Share a friend link to the article on social media.
  • Share it with your mailing list.
  • Be sure to mention it’s a free read, and put your Medium referral link on the post. You won’t earn money with the friend link, but someone may decide to join using your referral link. And that’s a bonus.
