How to Gain Back Your Attention Span to Maximize Productivity
Time without attention is a waste
Attention is the currency of time
We all know that time is the most important asset we have. We all want to utilize time to maximize our productivity.
However, time without attention is worthless.
If you are not present at the moment, you are devaluing your time.
If you are not giving your undivided attention to your tasks, you are devaluing your time.
For example, you are working on an important project that can help you get a promotion. If you are thinking about the promotion while working on the project, you are not utilizing your time. You will not be able to produce the work you desire.
Therefore, it’s important to live in the present moment. Here is how you can increase or gain back your attention span:
Avoid Multitasking
Multitasking is a myth.
If you are doing the work that does not require your full attention, then it’s okay to multitask. Otherwise, don’t do it.
Our mind works best when it’s focused on a single task at a time.
If I am writing an article on Medium, I focus solely on that. Because it demands my full attention.
Eliminate distractions
We are always distracted because we allow distractions in our life.
Here are some things you can do:
- Turn off notifications while working or studying
- Don’t work in the living room if there is a T.V.
- Find a quiet place while working on an important task. Don’t allow people to distract you
Use Pomodoro method
The Pomodoro method is like a sprint. You sprint for a short period, take a rest, and then start again.
Pomodoro is just like that. You work for 25 minutes, take a 5 minutes break, and work again for 25 minutes.
Taking short breaks allows your mind to recover from the intense work sessions.
Practice working for long hours (1–2 hours without distractions)
Nobody is born with laser-like attention. You have to work hard for that. You have to earn that.
Block a one-hour time in your calendar and assign a single task to that block. Only do that one task without any distractions.
It will be hard initially but with practice, you will be able to do that without any problems.
Don’t start with long work sessions. Start small and then go from there.
