How to Follow Your Dreams
A Tiny Moment of “Sometimes It’s as Simple as Keeping Straight Instead of Turning Left”
The Moment
I was stopped at the traffic light on Massachusetts Ave. I had traveled this way countless times and was thinking to myself, should I turn left and head home or should I continue straight and check out that culinary school down the road?
I was not finding success in my current career pursuits. In between jobs, which was a lot, I was always cooking up something on the grill or stove. Coming to that crossroad on Mass Ave, I was thinking about driving straight instead of turning left.
Contrary thoughts battled in my head. You already went to college. You’re supposed to be successful by now. You can’t afford more schooling. The light changed and this time I stayed straight.
The Reflection
Twenty years and many masterpiece dishes later, I am glad I decided to move ahead and stop beating my head against the wall trying to fit into an impossible shape. We all are born to do that one thing. The good news; that one thing is always adapting and metamorphosing. My journey has been from an athlete to social worker to chef to my latest path, acting.
I think we get the phrase, “life is too short,” confused. Moments are short. Moments are tiny. Life is long. Try as many things as possible if you can and don’t wait until the perfect moment. There is no such thing. You’ll never have enough or be enough if you don’t take that first step. Have no illusions. It’s all going to be difficult but not impossible. Enjoy the process. If you have a process and it isn’t working, get another process.
The Takeaway
- The universe will give you everything, but you have to ask and follow through.
- If you want to change your life. Make a change.
- Inertia is our biggest shackle.
- Life is long. Be patient. You’ve got time.
- There are no mistakes. One path directs you to your next route.
