How to Find Your Purpose — from a Top Podcaster with 20 Million Monthly Listeners
You are destined for something, or many things, great.
But are you struggling to a true purpose in life? You and I are in the same club. Recently, however, a lightbulb went off inside my head. There’s now a sketch of a road-map circulating in my mind.
How did this happen?
Well, I can safely tell you that Jay Shetty indirectly spoke to me.
Jay Shetty is a world-renowned expert in mindfulness, writer, and podcaster. In fact, iheartmedia reports that his podcast, On Purpose has 20,000,000 monthly listeners. He’s a former Hindu monk. This creative projects inspires millions of people around the world.
I’ve recently found him to be very influential in my life. His content full of interesting ideas and useful information. I’m currently reading his debut book Think Like a Monk and it’s very empowering.
As someone who’s on a journey of self-discovery, I found Jay’s book to be a breath of fresh air.
If you’re also learning about your purpose in life, then this book offers an easy map to follow. Jay refers to our purpose or calling as something similar to our dharma. This concept has meaning in both Hinduism and Buddhism.
You don’t have to adhere to either religion to enjoy this book. In my opinion it has a deeper message that is inclusive for everyone. Here’s a key message from the book that helped me narrow a focus on my life:
Feed Your Strengths
“You can’t be everything you want. But you can be everything you are.”
According to Jay, we need awareness to pay attention to the things we’re good at. Maybe you’re an excellent drawer, mathematician, driver, or leader. We each are good at many different things.
Next, we should think about the things we actually enjoy. Does the activity give you passion?
Think about whether you enjoy the process of doing an activity. Did your process create a positive result? The more we observe and think about these things then the closer we are to finding a greater purpose. Here’s what I’ve discovered mine is: I’ve found that writing is my passion that makes me feel truly happy.
Similarly, I do feel proud of what I’ve written so far. So, if two things align:
• We love the activity. • We are good at the activity.
Then we should water that activity. If we have something we are good at and enjoy then we should do that activity often. Investing time, energy, and even money (if it’s in your budget) into it will help this seed grow. The more we find activities that are synced like this, then we are entering the purpose zone. Maybe there is something you enjoy but aren’t good at it. You can always do things to level up our skills: Take courses, practice, get coaching, or use lots of free resources like YouTube about it.
Finally, how we feel is a strong signal that we are feeding our passions. • Do you feel alive? • Are in a flow state when you do it? • How comfortable are you? • Do you feel growth? • Is there a consistent feeling?
Follow your heart.
The pathway towards our calling perhaps isn’t linear. It might be totally invisible at times. However, over time if we listen to ourselves we can find it.
Also, I truly believe we are capable of having multiple purposes. As I said earlier, a lightbulb went off inside my mind after reading that part of Jay Shetty’s book. It inspired me to write more often and learn how to improve.
Thanks for reading. I hope you found this article useful. Jay, if you’re reading this, thank you too! P.S.
What’s a strength you have that needs some watering? I’m sure you have a lot!
