How to Find Your Great and Unique Side Hustle!
Let’s brainstorm

Every time I do research to find a unique side hustle idea, the same old tired responses come up in the google list. Take surveys, deliver groceries, drop shipping, etc. You can probably make this list as good as I can, and it all sounds so boring and overdone.
So how do I come up with an idea that is unique to me, something I would love, and something that will bring in some money?
The first thing is to decide what my talents and interests are.
For me, that would be crafts, sewing, cooking, writing, working with children, and probably a few other things that will come to mind later.
Now, what can I do with that list?
I let my mind wander through ideas, liking some and discarding others. And while this free flow of ideas is going on, an idea may start to gel in my mind.
Now, you try it.
What are your interests? Make a list. Add anything you can think of, even if it sounds far-fetched and not doable. What do you love? What do you dream about? If you could do anything at all, with no time clock to punch, what would it be? What are you good at?
Some of the things on your list may not sound at all like a business idea, but if you keep thinking, they may link to something that is. What do you do best at your job? Are you organized? Are you a good leader? Do you excel at making spreadsheets? Are you great at math?
Here’s an example. When I was unemployed, I wanted to come up with an idea that would pay and since I mainly worked with children and loved to read stories to them, I thought it could be something about them and reading.
Aha, a reading tutor!
So, I put together an ad, published it in the free newspaper, sent letters of introduction to a few schools, found a location, and waited to see if it would work.
And it did.
I got a call from an uncle of a young man who needed help with his reading comprehension, and we agreed to meet at the library. I discussed my format with the uncle, talked about goals we could set, agreed on a weekly meeting at the same library, rates, and then I met the youth. I tutored that young man for over a year, meeting him in that same setting and sitting in a quiet corner to work together, and his reading improved.
His uncle was thrilled with his progress and wrote a wonderful letter of recommendation, which I used in my advertising for new clients.
The point here is that I used something that I knew, something I was interested in and had a talent for, and was able to make money with it.
Here’s a list of things to consider as you put your ideas together.
- 5 things you are good at doing
- 5 personality traits you possess
- 5 tools that you already own that may help you earn money
- 5 income goals for the next 5 years
- 5 people you trust who support you in a variety of ways
- 5 ways you will invest in yourself
- 5 things you must do to get started
- 5 obstacles to overcome, eliminate, or manage
If you can fill that list out, you can be on your way to an income stream, IE side hustle.
Here’s another example of how this process can work, taking one of your assets or things you are good at.
You have a skill for organizing. You take this and turn it into a business, “Get Organized!”, going out and teaching others how to get their lives in order. (1) You can then add an online class to teach others how to start this as their business. (2) As the class grows, you could turn it into a larger-scale conference, renting spaces to others who have created businesses and want to, in turn, help others to do the same. (3) And you could create a blog that is about organizing and making life easier by being organized. (4) You could book speaking engagements to talk about starting an organizing business (5) and sell the book that you’ve written about your experiences. (6)
And you can do this for any or every skill that you possess, creating small or large income streams, depending on the amount of time you want to devote to each.
It’s surprising how easily this can work to create ideas, some noteworthy and some, of course, not. But the main thing is to get started brainstorming in your mind, enlisting other brainstormers if you have any, and develop an idea that could be a sure-fire winner.
(Here’s a note: While I was writing, I came up with an idea of my own, took notes in the notebook that’s always by my side, and now have another idea that may turn into a money maker for myself.)
And here’s the funny thing. I’ve been moping around, stuck on not having enough money, and as soon as this idea popped into my head, I became excited and started brainstorming for how I can expand on my idea. (Hint: it’s got to do with sewing and children.)
I’m hopeful that this will help you get started on your path to _________. A business, extra money, boredom relief, a side hustle, fulfillment, whatever it is that you’re looking for.
And if you answer those questions above, I know you will be successful in coming up with a fabulous idea!
