How To Find The Best Publication For You
Publication finding is hard, here’s how to find the best one for you…
Publications are one of my favorite things about Medium and the only way I have found the results I have with my writing. Publications, however, especially as a beginner are really difficult to find. Even more, finding the right publication for your work and writing.
This is exactly what I am going to be helping you with within this short article. Publications are powerful and can empower you and your writing to do well. Here’s how to find the right one for you and your work…
Tag Search
If you’re really lost when looking for the right publication for your article, make sure to do a quick tag search using the Medium search. Just go to the top right of your feed and click the magnifying glass.
Once you’ve done this, put in one tag that your article is about. To the right of all the story search results, there should be a series of suggested tags.
Click on the suggested tag that you’re looking for and you’ll find yourself on the tag’s page. Once you’re there, look through some of the stories and specifically pay attention to which publications they’re in.
Once you look through them, use the following tips to decide which publication out of those that you’re looking for is right!
Does The Publication Cater to The Niche Your Story Is About?
This one is quite obvious and makes sense for a couple of reasons. If you choose a publication about traveling and you write an article about side hustles, your article isn’t going to perform well in that publication since the publication’s niche is not side hustles.
Make sure you choose either a publication specifically about what your article talks about or a publication with multiple topics. A publication that does this for example is Illumination run by the amazing Dr. Mehmet Yildiz. Illumination for example has multiple sections including business, economy, philosophy, tech, and love.
There’s a good chance that if you’re reading this article it is in that very publication. If so, I highly recommend you follow the publication and apply to be a writer. There are some amazing editors on the publication such as Dr. Michael Heng, Dr. Preeti Singh, and Maria Rattray. Thank you guys for being so kind and helpful in the editing process, I really appreciate it!
Does the Publication Have an Audience That Will Enjoy Your Article?
This one is a bit harder to determine. Finding the publication is one thing, but making sure that the audience will like it is another. Once you find a publication, look at some of its apparent stats.
One common misconception is about follower counts. Don’t see a small follower count on the publication and leave it out of your consideration. Small publications are amazing.
For example, Loud Updates, a publication by Haider Jamal is a publication I love and it only has about 200 followers! Another example is Tom Fenske’s the Shortform, a great publication for short stories.
My articles do equally as well if not better in small publications as they do in larger, more established ones. If you’re not comfortable with choosing a small publication, choose a medium-sized one such as Illumination or Thoughts and Ideas.
Large publications are great too, but sometimes it can be hard to do well in them when they have well-established writers who could potentially drown out your work.
Instead of looking at follower counts, look at engagement. Look at claps and responses. Look at the numbers. If you see a consistent amount of relatively high claps, as in around 250 and above with some outliers on both ends(higher and lower), the publication should work for you.
Also, look at responses. If you find publications with articles that have quite a lot of responses as in over 5 or 6, that should let your article do well! These are not always surefire because if your article is something an audience is looking for and is a well-written article, you will do well.
