The importance of cherishing small things in life — here are a few ways to find happiness and practice mindfulness

The small things in life…

Are the ones that seem insignificant at times, but can make your day.

We all strive for happiness, but often forget how simple and small things can bring joy.

Especially with the world and everything around us moving so quickly.

Here are some tips to find happiness in the small things:

Think of the ones you love

Take a moment to close your eyes and think about the people that you care about, and people that care about you.

Sometimes life moves so fast that we forget to stay in touch with the ones we love, especially those who aren’t in immediate proximity.

Parents, siblings, children, old friends…

It’s never been easier to contact someone than today. Through the development of technology, we can easily (video) call someone living on the other side of the world.

If you feel like it, give them a call! I’m sure both of you will be happy to hear each others’ voices again!

The people you love matter the most and it’s important not to take anything for granted.

Make time for activities that you love

As life comes along, it can be difficult to make time for hobbies that you enjoyed in the past.

Often work, education, family matters, etc. take up a lot of time and make it difficult to prioritize your own well-being.

I remember doing many after-school activities in school times, ranging from playing the violin, making pottery, painting, dancing, playing basketball, and so much more.

Growing up it’s been increasingly difficult to find time for these activities.

However, I still try to make time for these hobbies because they make me happy and also, activate more parts of the brain :D

So try to make some time for the things you like(d) doing. Whether it’s knitting whilst watching a TV show or sitting outside and drawing the scenery.

Do something good for others

Something that brings happiness too, is bringing happiness to someone else.

Whether it’s someone you know well or someone random on the street.

Simple, small gestures can bring happiness.

Here are some ideas:

  • A short motivational note or appreciating a good quality that that person has
  • Chocolates (or other favorite sweets)
  • Surprise someone with a self-cooked meal

Go outside

Getting some fresh air is always a good idea :)

Take note of your surroundings, and observe all the details that are around you.

The smallest animals, chirping sounds of numerous bird species, the leaves rustling in the background.

Think about all the beautiful parts of the place you’re at.

You can go somewhere you’ve been to before … or even explore a completely new area.

Happiness is subjective. So many things can bring us happiness. But the most important thing is how we look at things ourselves.

No one knows about tomorrow.

The best is to live in the moment and to enjoy the present.
