How to find and do what you enjoy

Playing to Our Strengths before Job Hunting.

Before setting career objectives, it’s important to keep things in perspective and ensure that nothing is falling apart because we did not do our homework.

If we want to find and do what you enjoy, we must be ready for the hard work with ourselves, by raising our levels of Self -awareness and, very important, to work on career exploration.

Things have changed over the last decade and navigating career options can be a challenging process for young people, particularly with so many different pathways leading to a variety of career outcomes.

Career exploration includes cultivating ourselves with decision-making skills and getting information and exposure to a wide range of occupations. Career exploration, ideally, should begin as early as possible in our lives, for better results

Part-time and summer jobs or vocational education programs are all career exploratory experiences that can define later success. Learning about various occupations and their fit with your unique career preferences will help you choose career aspirations that fit.

Sometimes we fail to obtain success in our career due to a lack of self-understanding about the world of work. Or, because the information we have is well outdated.

Before setting career objectives, we should first define our career preferences and continuously make sure we do our part of research, evaluation, and learning about career opportunities.

Here are 4 hidden Strengths that all young people should consider using when starting their careers. For finding and doing what we enjoy, we should know how to use these tools to our advantage.

1. Know your Values

These are personal principles that give our life meaning and allow us to persevere through adversity.

Our core values may be different than the ones of others but we need to be aware of them and use them properly and they will inspire us to keep going when it gets tough.

Knowing these values will help us respond to questions related to Who we are, Why do we make things in a certain way, and why we react sometimes the way we do.

2. Self-Awareness

Assessing your interests and considering your skills, means you need to get involved in analyzing your Career Choices and suitability well before making a Career Plan.

Self-assessment helps you to evaluate your values, abilities, work, and learning preferences.

Matching your interests, competencies with your qualifications is critical. You would know at this point what is missing and what you should improve at yourself to achieve your career plan.

We need to take time to explore our career options so we can determine what the best Career step is. Only by learning what our strengths and weaknesses are, we would know what needs to be done for turning our dream, passion, or objective into Career.

3. Personal Interests

Another factor that may impact our career direction towards enjoying what we do is paying attention to our Interests.

It is in our interest to understand that, for example, Sports, as Personal Interest can bring us also useful occupational skills such as being a Team player, having Leadership abilities, or being able to work well with others.

As well, for example, Child Care as Personal Interest can be used to illustrate that we are responsible and that we put importance in thinking of others.

Job satisfaction is closely linked to having a real interest in the tasks you perform. Being involved early in a career in those activities which we have an interest in can make it easier for achieving success.

You can start by making a list of your accomplishments, those actions or projects in which you did well, and from which you got a sense of pride, satisfaction, and achievement.

4. Family background and Education

When it comes to our Career decisions, we need also to understand the role of our family background and our education. Sometimes we aim too high, too low or, we do not aim enough to push our Career in the right direction.

The role of our Family and Education play is way more important than we may think. Family and Education can influence our work values in ways that can make or break a career. There is no doubt that we need to understand the parental and educational influence if we want to attain meaningful career goals.

We value the opinions of family members so much, we consult and depend on their opinion when we make a decision. And that is great. Some take from here the success drivers or even the example for how not to be later in life.

However, in some cases, we are even willing to compromise our interests when we are making career decisions. And without even realizing it. In many instances the family advice serves us well in our career, but what if it doesn’t?

It is important to understand and accept Family background and its influence on future career development. And to be able to decide on own on what we need and what we value.

What I consider more important is understanding that, education is one of the strongest predictors of both life and occupational status. Regardless your family background how you manage your education is fully up to you.

Final Word

Knowing what we enjoy most and, most importantly, how to use what we enjoy concerning our strengths is of lifelong importance.

This way, not only that we will feel more engaged and fulfilled with our lives but we will also have the opportunity to try many different career paths and to achieve our career goals every single time.

By investing some time in listening to our inner voice, seeing ourselves clearly, and putting our interests to serve us we prepare ourselves to answer basic questions about ourselves.

Who we are and What is fit for us are not just job common interview questions. Are questions that will hunt us many times during our lives and, being able to answer these questions means paying a great service to our future career, first and foremost.
