You need to figure out what you want

A lot of people feel lost in their life. They might dread going to their job, feel stuck in their marriage, and forget most of their ambitions.

The only thing they have are memories of their past when they were more hopeful about life.

You can make beautiful new memories. You just need to make clear what you want out of your life.

Drifting aimlessly

One of the ways through which meaning comes into your life is by pursuing something that matters and resonates with you.

For me, this meant pursuing a degree in psychology. I tried different things before concluding that psychology is something that is meant for me.

The most relevant attempt towards pursuing a career was programming. I was lucky enough to pass some exams early in my teens, and I was accepted into a programming academy. It was an interesting experience.

I was 16 years old, and the people there were about 20 years old or above. Most of them attended college or had jobs.

I was feeling fortunate, but at the same time, going through the curriculum that we had, I realized that programming was not for me. I enjoyed the conversations I had with other people a lot more than what I was supposed to do. I loved understanding how other people think and why they had certain beliefs.

I quit the academy, and I decided that I would pursue a degree in Psychology. Every step on that journey was meaningful for me. Even though I had my hardships I felt in my heart that it was the right thing to do.

I made a decision, and I clarified what I wanted out of my life. That brought meaning and banished any feelings of hopelessness I might have had.

There is a myriad of tricks and hacks on the internet that are supposed to make you feel better. Nevertheless, nothing will have the same impact as having a goal to strive towards.

Find that goal by experiencing different ideas you might have, talking with people, and researching.

Simply walking aimlessly through life won’t help you. Your days will pass without your notice. You will find yourself old and full of regret, wishing you had a plan, wishing you tried more things.

Write down what you want right now, and start making steps towards it.
