How to Embed a Spotify Song on Medium
And why you probably shouldn’t use it unless you’re a music reviewer.
Spotify is the most popular streaming service on the planet right now. It has over 232 million subscribers, 108 million of which have paid plans. They offer a great way for you to listen on the run and offer cool playlists that fit any mood or situation.
They also embed into Medium articles.
Here’s what a Spotify song embed looks like on Medium:
And here’s what a Spotify playlist looks like:
As you can see, song links embed directly — although you don’t get to listen to the whole song. They force you to go to the Spotify app to listen to the rest of the tune. This is still a cool tool if you do music reviews or just want to show a snippet of a song.
If you want to embed a whole song, I’d try and find the YouTube video of the song instead.
The playlists just get the same old box treatment as regular links in Medium, making them less useful as a tool for your writing workflow.
Either way, the process to embed a song is simple:
- Find the song on Spotify
- Click the “…” button
- Click the “Share” button
- Copy the song link
Then, copy and paste that link into your Medium editor and hit “Enter”. The embed should automatically show up!
If that doesn’t work…
When you have an empty line while writing on Medium, a “+” button appears to the left:
When you click on it, a few options will appear. Click on the “<>” embed button.
Doing this will give you the option to paste a link to embed content into the article.
Paste the link and hit enter and the Spotify song embed should show up.
This embed tool is mainly for music reviewers, but if you figure out a different use for it please let me know!
The Spotify embed is way too big in my opinion — I wish they would make it a small line so that it doesn’t take up half the screen. Hopefully the engineers will be able to fix this in the near future.
